  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Forgive my rambling. If you’ve seen many of my posts, you know I like writing. You also likely know I’m primarily a CC smoker, like many of you. However, as we all know, that branch of the hobby is being driven by astronomical price increases. Habanos S.A. saw record numbers in 2024, and they will not be slowing down, ever. They would rather ditch the regular production stuff that we so love, focus on the RE/LE/Hiba/Trini stuff that fills their pockets oh so well, and possibly forget about everything else little by little. Who really wanted the LGC line to dwindle down? Who?? That’s right, nobody. They’ve done it before and they will continue. Call me an alarmist, but I kinda fear for regular production Juan Lopez down the line, maybe Robaina too. I’m not posting to discuss the CC or NC markets, as lord knows I don’t have a brain for business.

My CC stock will not be growing, much, I don’t believe. I would, however, like it to last for several more years, if not a couple more decades. NC’s will never satisfy completely what I love about the stuff from that little island, but there is a LOT of great NC leaf to be had. I’m not posting to discuss “What NC is the most CC-like?” That’s been done to death, usually to little if any success. I’m not posting to discuss “replacements” for my Habanos stuff. So what am I doing?

Just making a journal, but publicly. Over the Summer months, and probably well into Fall, I will be opening my palate to things I either haven’t tried, or have only tried a couple times and really enjoyed, and occasionally things I know I love, with a focus not on “replacing,” but rather on filling the gaps between my CC smokes. Scratching the itch, if you will. Admittedly I’ve only got a small handful of brands in mind for this particular project. Namely Aladino, Curivari, Illusione, and Warped. A few others will make appearances, and I’m even open to some suggestions here and there. The idea is simple. Ramblings from a CC-loving palate, about brands and sticks that scratch my itch to some extent. Will it scratch yours? Difficult to say. Again, despite what it may seem, my focus is not on replacement. That’s impossible. My focus is on filling the gaps. Scratching the itch.

This is a journal for me, and if you want to humor me, awesome! If not, no worries. Taste buds are all different, and flavor profiles really are subjective. I currently do duo reviews with a friend on a different forum, and we’ve proven time and time again that no two people taste the exact same things, though they might agree on a spectrum of the “flavor wheel.” Cigar reviews are one person’s impressions on a smoke, nowhere near universal truth. Some of the notes will be a little more general, not full-length reviews.

First one going up soon, Aladino Corona.

Cheers!

How many cigars have you taken from me in the past two years alone???
Smoke the damn things!!! You just might find something that you love, and that's not a bad thing.
I've given the cold shoulder to so many brands and a few years ago that changed from gifted smokes.
I'm always on a cigar 'walkabout' and it has opened my mind tremendously. Brands like NC HUp got me like "WHAT???"
Never judge a book by it's cover, and don't be afraid. If you don't like it...toss it.

Matt, I'm boring and predictable. I need to go ahead and light some of those cigars up.
No doubt! I don't send duds, but of course we all have different tastes.
Sometimes you just gotta dive in though. I've been shocked buy so many gifted cigars that I wouldn't have purchased otherwise.

Oh, I’ve definitely found some new friends in those sends you gave me, that are absolutely fantastic! I still have a lot left, too. They’re not my usual, but they’ve been superb (those Mr Whites!!) Like I said in my post, there is some absolutely fantastic NC to be had. I haven’t done reviews of them necessarily, but those Fantasy Football wins from you and @BloodWood have been fire, mate!

I look forward to seeing what you have to say. I went through a similar transition from 90/10 Cuban to NC, and now I am 10/90... when that first big price jump it, I was priced out of the market. I have done a lot of exploring in that time with a lot of duds and a handful of Mehs but I'm able to find a gem every so often. I buy so many singles, I could buy my cigars on a dating app... :ROFLMAO:

Looking forward to your journey, maybe for some recommendations, maybe for some "avoid this one at all costs".

I've gone from 95/5 CC to NC to closer to 60/40. I've been loving Rojas' stuff in addition to a couple other favorite brands. but I'm always looking for the next great cigar.

Better you then me :ROFLMAO: but I will fallow to see what a CC guys opinion on the NCs is!
I hope you don't find what I found "That after I finished a NC I feel like I just wasted an hour of my time"
To be fair, some Habanos have made me feel that way before. Once, even a BBF… that was a sad day. Hoping not to have that result, too many times, during this run.

Unfortunately I see this as the end result in most cases :cautious: The older Fuentes and Padrons do hit the spot every so often.
You guys are tearing the ass outta me! Based one what? Which NC's???
Have you both had a Rojas Carnitas for example???
No.

No.

The last thing I want to be responsible for is some type of ass surgery that you're going to need after reading this stuff.
I don't think we're trying to look down on NC's but the profile is so much different than a CC. It's just hard to explain when you've been smoking cigars for 30 plus years.

Also, to clarify, it’s not me seeking to go from a beloved product to a lesser one. That isn’t how I see the different markets. I just happen to prefer one over the other, personally, although I have had stellar NC product that I enjoyed very much, from many different marcas. Used to smoke a ton of Padrons, but those to me are completely different than the CC flavor profiles I’ve come to love. Enjoying Illusione stuff, as always, and Viaje and Warped too. Just looking to try some mostly new-to-me NC things that might have a little bit of those notes, while I let my CC boxes rest for years longer, and thought I’d post my thoughts up here.

Of course, right as I say I’m going to do this journal thing, life hits and is currently preventing me from starting
