My guy at Binny's pulled me aside yesterday (after I took a pass on the drops for that day) and handed me the new Willet Small Batch Cask Strength. This one clocks in at 126.4 proof, and I've been hearing good things, so I took a flyer on it at $65. He thinks it will be hard to come by (at least for a while), so I am glad I get to try without paying secondary.

Later, I continued the crud killing.

Is the Willet 4 years old? Cast strength should be a keeper.

Jim, it is a 4 year. Opened it last night, and I have to admit I was a little disappointed. Soft nose with a hint of dark fruit. Palate is where the real issue, the bourbon tastes too young. More hints of dark fruit but no complexity and nothing standing out. Short finish, glad I got it at retail. I have a few bourbon friends locally who are jonesing to try it, so it won’t go neglected.

I had a pour of the JD Heritage after the Willett, so enjoyed it much more. Both of them are similar in price.

It's a shame that it's so youthful and good on you for letting others try it out before they spend the coin.

Haven't had a Jack Daniel's Barrel Strength pick open for a bit, so I opened this one from a local bourbon group and liquor store last night. I'd say it's middle of the pack for the single barrels I've had, great palate and viscosity, but really short unremarkable finish. Still pretty good though.

Tom, what rickhouse is that bottle out of? The proof point and color look spot on.
