BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE
Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.
Lighters or wooden matches?

I use a torch lighter. I toast the end with it first and then light it up. The torch lighter is a clean flame and offers the ability to direct the flame to any unlit portion easily. Thus allowing you to light the entire foot evenly right off the bat. Also wind is no longer an issue. If you want to try one out, look for a ronson at CVS. That and a can of butane can bbe found for less than $10
I am only a fan of the long cedar matches if I can get them, but I have been known to rip up an old thin cigar box to use that cedar to light my cigars. The flame is gentle and forgiving.
An "odorless" triple or more refined butane lighter is good to, I also own them.
They are great and not dangerous to ruining the taste of the cigar, as regular lighter fluid leaves a taste at first. The only draw back is that many produce a "torch" flame, kind of like a blow torch and greater care must be used in lighting the cigar. Took me a little while to master the settings on my Xikar lighter and the burn on the stick.
Overall the lighter is much more convenient and fool proof once mastered. I only use the cedar when I have friends over and want to gently light a expensive stick. You can't match the lighter in correcting burn and applying touch ups. I would go to a store and try some. Some of the lighters (usually more expensive) produce a near flame like burn as opposed to torch.

I actually like to use metal matches as opposed to wooden ones. :dunno:

My weapon of choice is usually a bic, because torches don't work at my parent's house in the Springs (7200 feet). But I'll use torches down here in Greeley, or a bic, or matches, whatever's closest to my hand!

I use the same method as Dave. I have an Xtend that works great every time! I used to use cedar matches, but they are harder to carry when you are out and about.

I don't have enough cigars wrapped in cedar or any cigar boxes that have them, or I might use them more often. That is how I light when I'm at the lounge.

Always used butane, the past 2 weeks, I have been trying and liking matches... even though it takes me 2-5 matches to light one. SOme sort of classic... cool feel to using a match.
Can you believe, I bought a single at the Cigar Inn, upper east side, pish fancy place, and the dude who owns it, offers to give me a light, and the guy goes to light me up with a bic lighter.

I have less burn issues with a butane torch.
I use a lighter almost exclusively since I smoke outside. On the rare occasion I'm smoking inside (at a B&M, etc) I'll use a cedar strip or wooden matches for fun.
As long as you don't scorch the end of your cigar when you light, you're fine using whatever. Just be careful with zippo fuel or paper matches, if you're not careful, you'll be tasting lighter fluid.

If I'm at work, or on the road, I'll use the torch lighter. If i'm relaxing or have all the time I want, I'll go with Matches (the lighting, turning the cigar, puffing is all part of enjoyment)....
Nibo has some fairly good but reasonably priced lighters. since I lose lighters easily, I have a hard time paying a lot for one. Watch out for the 2 and 3 jet torches. They are very effective but believe it or not, you can have too big of a flame.
Since I never pass up the chance to use fire or explosives, I have a hard time reconciling my self to my previous comment.
