  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I'm a pretty organized fellow, especially when it comes to my cigars and storing them. I'm a No Cello kind a guy and i seperate everything using either cedar blocks or cedar strips. I was told way back when when i worked in the smoke shop that cigars of different brands should not touch each other to avoid the flavors of each marrying. i have lived and died by this philosophy and have given up considerable storage capacity because of it. I've even lost sleep over the issue, knowing that one of my cigars is trying to round first base by touching it's foot on the wrapper of another.

I've seen several pictures on this sight of peoples different caches and have noticed that on several occassions various people have allowed their cigars to have unprotected relations with one another. Believing those people to have considerable knowledge of cigars has led me to possibly believe that this "segregation," of which I've been an adamant supporter, may not be all that important.

Do i need to catch up with the times and realize that segregation is a thing of the past? Do i need to break through the color barrier? Do i need to tear down the walls of...ok, enough already.

Thoughts?

I don't have enough aging expereince.
However, from what I have read.
As long as you keep flavored cigars out of the loop you should be fine.
Marrying would take an extremly long time to happen, if at all.
Again though, I don't have real world expereince here, so I rather hear what some other brothers have to say.

I found that allowing some touchy feeling has benefited some lesser smokes while not taking away from the better ones. I too keep the ISOM's segregated as they do not play well with others.

Funny, I was just debating over this topic with myself. My younger side says screw it just dump um in there, they will be fine. The older side says to unwrap um and let them mingle, hell they don't have a long life anyhow!

I would care if I had them mixed and aging for like 6 years. Even with 20ish boxes in my possession I go through cigars fast enough that I don't think it matters much. Plus as I get new boxes I shuffle things around so if somehow they were marrying they start marrying with something else real soon; my sticks are real harlots. I do keep them grouped but not segregated. Don't get me wrong it's not an interracial cigar orgy in my humidor I keep maddies with maddies as much as possible and my isoms elsewhere.

Careful!! Talking to yourself can lead to serious social problems. People will really start to stare at you, especially when you start answering yourself...out loud.:argue:

I'm getting to be a tetris master so I don't worry about what's where, as long as it fits!

OK, i just added the 10 sticks i got today and as tough as it was, i didn't p;ut any cedar stips in between them and they are DEFINITELY touching. I started sweating and getting short of breath. Thank god for that paper bag in my back pocket.

But i perservered and rearranged everything in my non-aging stash. I got tons of room now. I've got my eye on several things on CBID right now. Looking to add up to 40 sticks by nights end. Life is good.

Now i will say this to the whole mixing debate. i refuse to allow the 30 or so sticks that i plan on aging for at least 3 years to touch. I feel it is my civil duty to maintain the integrity of each cigar, as was surely intended by the manufacturer.

A others have said, i kind of think if it's going to be smoked within a year, touching another cigar isn't going to make a big difference, and it may even help in some occassions.

regardless, as tough as it is for me to accept, i do believe i will live to see another day despite the fact my cigars are touching.

I hear where you come from brother. I hate having different marcas touching each other and use cedar strips, empty tubos and pretty much anything that makes sense to me to keep them segregated.

Good to hear you do that too and loose sleep over one marca touching another.. thought I was the only one good to know I have company.

Edit: I remember reading some where that it doesn't really matter if you mix up your sticks it only when you age long term (guessing 3-5 years at least) do that oils start mixing and the cigars start messing with each other but still I like to believe my segregation keeps their all the flavours locked in.
