  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Is this a Hobby???

Every now and then someone refers to cigar smoking as a hobby. This is perfectly fine, but to me it really does not meet the definition of a hobby.

Although Dictionary.com says: Hobby; an activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation and not as a main occupation: Her hobbies include stamp-collecting and woodcarving.

I used to be into RC cars, and photography. To me these are hobbies. By the definition above I have many hobbies, such as drinking Jack Daniels, sex, watching a beautiful sunset over a lake or mountain, etc, etc.

I think of cigar smoking as a time to kick back, reflect on the day, think about tomorrow and dream about the future.

What do ya'll think?

I think so for sure. I would say Bourbon could be a hobby as well. But not just jack Daniels. That might jusrt be a habit.. Cigars as a hobby have history, and current events to learn about. There are countless brands and sizes to enjoy, so I would say to most of us it's a hobby. Now if you only smoked one brand and the same number per day, at the same time a day I might say it is NOT a hobby, but rather a habit. I enjoy relaxing with a new smoke and looking for it's particular nuances. For me It's a HOBBY

Well said Dave. I concur. :applause:

the guy who mowes the grass at my country club that always has a half gone cigar stuck in the corner of his mouth has a cigar HABIT. Me, the guy who takes notes on the new sticks he tries, has a HOBBY.

I'd like the see the lawnmowermans cigar journal...Today a noticeable amount of spittle slid out of my mouth while i was chewing on my cigar...a piece of freshly clipped fairway grass found it's was onto my cherry, it was a refreshing flavor. i may have to try that again...

I think collecting cigars, aging them, acquiring accessories, memorabilia, reading literature, discussing the topic on public forums.....this is a hobby.

Smoking cigars is not a hobby.

So the thoughts and ideas of cigars are a hobby, but the smoking of the subject matter is not.

I might buy that.

Collecting cars, restoring them, looking at them, detailing them, caring for them...is a hobby. Driving said cars is not. 2 seperate actions.

Most of us here have gone beyond just buying cigars and enjoying them. We seek out new cigars or rare cigars, we share reviews and pictures, and we basically revel in the minutia. A casual cigar smoker probably won't care about the difference between ligero and seco, or which factory produces a specific vitola, or the history of Cuban cigar industry. They won't painstakingly research optimal humidity levels, debate over the best cutters, compile lists of box codes, or drive two hours to shake hands with Pepin Garcia.

So, to answer your question: I don't think that cigar smoking is necessarily a hobby, but cigar collecting is. Of course, it's a different sort of collecting than stamp collecting or coin collecting, since most of us intentionally destroy our collections one stick at a time. :smokingbo

I believe the collecting and storage of Great cigars to be a Hobby. But the consumption to be a Pass Time. That being said, time to pass some time.

Smoke em if you got em.:smokingme

Yeah, I would agree with this. Clearly, collecting, cataloging, discussing cigars is a hobby. Smoking is purely enjoyment.

Thanks for the opinions.

Good analogy, and I'd add that when we smoke our cigars we appreciate them in the same way a car collector does when he takes his prize out for a spin.

The appreciation is what drives the distinction.

I agree that the collecting, and stuff is a hobby...smoking, I don't think so...if it was, then drinking water, diet coke, Maker's Mark and wine would all be hobbies!
