  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

The Ohio Hurricane...???

Who would have guessed. A BOTL trade I'm involved with has been slightly delayed due to...hurricane? Yes, that's right, Hurricane Ike hit Ohio this weekend.

...we just got our power turned back on last night!

Now, before you cry BS, let me assure you that I'm serious. Ike had petered out in Illinois to mostly a bad rain storm, but then when it hit Ohio it gobbled up a large nasty cell of heat and humidity--kicking it back up to a real bugger of a storm.

We had sustained winds of up to 79 mph at my house for more than 6 hours. It gave our roof a little "boost" and ripped off a support beam between our roof and porch, as well as removing some shingles (not sure how extensive the roof damage really is because it hasn't rained since then). We also lost a screen door and flower garden, and a few other things.

This isn't a "complaint," mind you, just me sharing about my weekend. We were actually fairly fortunate compared to most in our neighborhood--I think everyone on my block needs a new roof! There were also a couple people killed near us, which is just awful. And of course none of this really compares to the damage down in Texas.

Apparently this was the worst storm in 25 years in Dayton, which I believe. I"m from Minnesota and we see tornadoes now and then, but that sort of damage is pretty isolated--this is just so widespread. There are still people here without power, and they might not have it back until the weekend!

Crazy stuff. Anyway my **trade** will now go out tomorrow, sorry for the delay.

My wife would probably have preferred that my cigar collection had blown away, but fortunately for me they're safe and sound :)

Yes, it's all true.

I still dont have power. Been running the fridges and frezzers off a generator since Sunday at 3 pm.

This is the first i've seen of the internet since Saturday morning, and where do i go??? To my boys here on BOTL. Haven't seen TV since that terrible football game on Saturday night.

No damage to the house. No damage to family. All is well.

Thank God i was on the road yesterday so i got to listen to the radio all day. Caught up on all the news.

Wow, you still don't have power? That's nuts. I"m glad you have a genny though, that's awesome. After this experience, I think I'll buy one at some point. I'm just so glad it was nice and cool this week. If it had been 90 and humid like last week...bad bad things.

It is weird what 2 days without tv will do to you. Fortunately, I have an iPhone now so while AT&T was in service (intermittently) I was able to surf and get news--that's how I learned how widespread it was. I figured it was just my neighborhood without power--turns out it was half the area plus most of Cincinnati. Insane.

Glad all of yours are well too.

Generator's are like guns it's better to have them and not need em, then need em and not have em!

I hear that. I've always known people who had them in MN, but I never thought I'd need one in Ohio.

What sucks is that it's so widespread that it's not like I could bring food to a friend's house until my power came back...since all my friend's were without power too (accept those on base...they've got some crazy good generators there!). My wife drove all over to try to buy a couple bags of ice...none to be had anywhere.

I"m just so happy to be fortunately enough to have only been without power for two days. All my food even seems okay...accept the milk is a little funky.

Same here in Canton.........I thought it was bad that I had a tree down and no power for 72 hours until I remind myself that the people in Texas, Louisiana, the islands, etc., always get it much worse. Lucky and glad it wasn't worse......I hope my beer doesn't taste too bad after I re-chill it!

OK< my power finally came back on around 11 am this morning. Yahoo!!!! it's a happy day.

But, after all this commotion, the wife and i decided to buy a few things...a real generator for the house that will power everything; stove, fridges, freezer, lights, tv and so on. Our hot water is gas forced. our heat is a gas forced hot water/radiator heat, so that helps out a lot. As long as the gas lines don't get destroyed we'll be ok.

Also gonna buy a handgun. and not some little .22 pistol, but a .45. What is it they say...a .38 will slow em down, a 9mm knocks em down, but a .45 lays em down and they ain't gettin' back up.

Eventually i forsee us being without power for a long period of time, and when we are, people is gonna be gettin nuts. i want a gun. But taht's a whole nother story.

Now I'm picturing you sitting on your front porch smoking a stoggie with your gun in your lap thinking "Yea, try it punk."

Looks more and more like I really lucked out. Power is pretty much completely restored in my immediate area, but I have lots of co-workers who are still without power and might remain so for days. My sons, who live only a few blocks from us, never lost power. We were about to haul all the food over to their place when the lights came back on.
As bad as this storm seemed to us, what amazed me was that we only got a fraction of the wind the folks on the coast experienced, and just a touch of rain after the wind subsided. I can`t begin to imagine what the full force of the hurricane was like.
Glad everyone`s OK.

The power just came on here about an hour ago. I have no damage to my house but lost a few trees. My fridge has not been this clean since we bought it! It is totally empty and my wife cleaned it within an inch of its life. I cut most of the trees with an AXE! (I needed the exercise:sadstare:) Oh, and this was my vacation week.

Actually it has been very relaxing. No noise, weather has been great, if this happened in the middle of winter I would seriously crying right now!

I thought I had it bad...no power for 24 hours. It was cool though. I had enough juice left on the portable DVD player to keep the kids happy for the night.

Glad everyone up here made it through the worst ok.
