  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

This is great, thanks. Seems like Chuck posted something recently about the effects of moderate smoking of cigars.

This is great, thanks. Seems like Chuck posted something recently about the effects of moderate smoking of cigars.
The one I remember from Chuck was this:
I borrowed this from a post by Doclogic...

"The National Institutes of Health, with the National Cancer Institute, published its long awaited Monograph number 9, Cigars, Health Effects and Trends in February, 1998. This publication is to date the most complete compilation of cigar research and health risks. NCI's conclusions regarding cigars and health are easily contested. But the papers they present should interest any student of the heath risks of cigar smoking. This monograph is highly recommended.

The relative risk values are the relative risk of occurrence of a certain disease compared to the general non-smoking population (which is considered a standard of "1"). It should be emphasized that the National Cancer Institute states that a "relative risk of less than 2 are considered small and are usually difficult to interpret." The NCI report then is encouraging to the moderate cigar smoker. According to the NCI the relative risk ratios of death are all less than 2 for smokers limiting cigar consumption from 1 to 2 a day for: 1) all causes of death, 2) lung cancer, 3) pancreatic cancer, 4) emphysema, and 5) coronary artery disease. Cancers of the oral cavity and larynx have higher risk ratios but are intimately associated with heavy alcohol use. "

Great article, thanks for this!

The thing you have to understand about medical research is this...there is a HUGE difference between "possibly link" and "cause." When you read that something has a "possibly link" to, say, cancer, all that means is that STATISTICALLY people who do that activity/have that risk factor tend to also get cancer more. It's just statistics, nothing else. It's the same reason you pay more to insure a red care than a gray car--statistically, red cars get into more trouble.

When people say there is a "possible link" between cigar smoking and heart disease, it means very little. All it means is that cigar smokers are more likely to eat a poor diet and not exercise enough, etc., not that cigars themselves are bad in that way.

I believe the body of evidence shows that cigars in limited amounts (1-2 per day) have very little effect on overall health. In reference to that article...to prescribe 3 cigars a day? Ehh...I'm going to have to call bullshit on that one.

This article must be expressing the minority prosition on tabacco and tabacco products. You would be hard pressed to find the majority of the medical community agreeing with this. Though there are those that develop cancers from other than tobacco, most of the lung, and lip cancers are found in people that use tobacco products.

The cigarrette companies are paying out millions due to tobacco. What they did was criminal. Increasing the nicotine in cigarettes to get people more hooked. I am glad that this is not happening with cigars but it is hard for people to differentiate. To them tobacco is tobacco.:lookaroun
