  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

My daughter's boyfriend, a Londoner with an Irish father and Scottish mother, turned me on to the pleasure of Irish whiskey & Scotch whisky this winter. So I'm relatively new to all this but I find these drams are just amazing with a nice cigar (and vice versa). I just can't spend $75 or more for a bottle though. So, in my price range so far I've experienced Black Bush, Jameson 12, Redbreast pure pot-stilled 12, Johnnie Walker Black Label, Highland Park 12 (an Orkney single malt) and just last night, Talisker 10, a single malt from the Isle of Skye, paired with a Padilla '68. Man, that Talisker let me know who was boss. It was so easy drinking and the next thing I knew I was swimming. That hasn't happened before. Lovely taste though. I just have to go slower I guess. Yeah, lightweight, I know...:hanghead:

Glenlivet 12 single malt can be had for less than 30 bucks for a 750 mil, Macallan for around 40. Both are good go to scotches for me when I don't feel like a snifter of cognac.

yea, If u havent had the Macallan 12, its a must try. thats pretty much the gold standard that all single malts are compared to 50$ is a good price. Now all time fav. the Bunnahabhain 18 year. now I know I butchered that spelling, 85$ is a good price. stay away from Johnnie walker..well.. unless u actually like the taste...

In my honest opinion, and in the opinion of some very prominent reviewers, if you had JW Black and HP 12 in your bar you would possess two of the very best value scotches/blended scotches on the market.

If you want to try something that has some very pleasant sweet honey notes I would definitely recommend The Balvenie 12 Doublewood ($50 a 5th). Expensive, yes, but worth every penny IMO

The Glenlivet 15 yr. French Oak Reserve is a fantastic Scotch. Smooth and creamy with a clean finish. Just add drop of water to it and enjoy. It's one of my favorites and isn't too terribly expensive. I think it's a steal for the price, somewhere around 35-40 bucks. I recommend giving it a try with something like a Cabaiguan.

I wrote a little bit about it on my blog along with a couple of the other Glenlivet offerings. I went to a tasting a while back it was a blast. http://cigarsbymatt.wordpress.com/2008/12/20/the-glenlivet-tasting/

The Macallan is on my list along with Lagavulin 12, Cragganmore 12 and Teacher's Highland Cream. I won't have to buy a bottle of something I've already had for a while!

Moro, Ardbeg is one of those super peaty ones like Laphroiag, right? I have to say that the Lagavulin I've had (only one glass) was as peaty as I'm going to go. I like it on the finish, but a mouthful of it probably isn't in a bottle purchase for me.

We sell a LOT of this at our shop. One of our employees started a bottle one afternoon and by nights end there was about 5 shots left in it, he drank the whole damn thing by himself...drunkard!

bah, google is your friend. A fifth is 26 ounces, roughly.

$50 for a 26 of good scotch is a decent price up here. Hell, JW Black is almost $40, I think.
