My Father No. 3 Cremas
(Skip the next paragraph if you want to get straight to the review)
Don Pepin Garcia, former master roller and head of Quality Control for (Cuban) Cohiba cigars, has been blending and producing highly acclaimed cigars over the past few years. Pepins most recent venture is the My Father series. Apparently the original My Father was created in secret by Pepin's son Jaime, who crafted the cigar as a tribute to his father. (Sounds like some creative marketing to me, but who knows!) The No. 3 Cremas is 6 x 49, and is made with a hearty mixture of aged Nicaraguan long-fillers grown from Cuban-seed in Esteli, Nicaragua. The wrapper is unusual for Pepin cigars A Habano-Rosado leaf produced in Ecuador.
Pre-light
Pretty cigar, with a silky, slightly oily wrapper. The head is rounded slightly, then more or less flat a the end Classy look. After cutting, the draw seemed tight, so I snipped off just a bit more Still tight, but not too restricting.
First Third
This cigar starts of medium bodied, with a background of leather and steak. A bit of spice and citrus darts in and out.
The burn is true, requiring no touch ups at all; and the ash is light grey and solid All indicating good craftsmanship. The draw is a bit tight, but so far the cigar is not heating up.
A pleasant, almost sweet aroma contrasts the stronger flavors.
Second Third
The cigars flavor profile starts to intensify slightly. This cigar has a distinct flavor of meat or steak with a peppery finish. Hints of citrus still float around, and there is generous amounts of smoke despite a draw that still feels slightly tight.
Last Third
Patience pays off as this cigar really begins to take off. The draw opens up (most likely just a gnarled spot) and large amounts of smoke and flavors pour forth. The home stretch provides the palate with notes of meat, leather and orange peel. Great burn qualities continue, and each time the dropped ash reveals a perfect, cone-shaped cherry despite the draw issues This is a well made cigar.
Closing
A well made, good looking cigar with some enjoyable flavors. There was a distinct flavor of steak; more precisely, a steak encrusted with peppercorns. Notes of orange peel dart in and out as well Not complex, but balanced and nice. Cant wait to try another in hopes that some more rest and a better draw will impress even more.
