I use the square cut toothpicks. It helps to stop the nub from rotating on the toothpick when taking a puff which happens sometimes with regular round toothpicks.
I'm not surprised Mitch had them. I'm sure that backpack had everything you would need to take on the trip (as long as it was legal to travel with).
