Opinions on EdgeStar Wine Cooler

With the warm weather approaching and not wanting to run the a/c all the time to maintain ideal temperature while I'm not home, I think it's time to invest a wine cooler for my cigars. I was looking at this EdgeStar and was wondering if anyone had one or had an opinion on EdgeStars in general.

I know, I know...why don't I just step up and get the 28 ct.? haha, I'm a newbie and this should be just fine for right now. Second, could anyone recommend a brother or a company that makes shelves for wine coolers? Thanks in advance!

I am currently in the process of converting the Edgestar 28. I ordered shelves and drawers from Chasidor.com and still waiting to get them. If you need help shoot me a PM. I did the same thing (buying smaller units) so now I have 3 including the 28!
Go for the 28, it will save you $ in the long run, I'm speaking from experience..

http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?dest=5&item=457730 for a little more money. Although I do not know how accurate the cooling part is. I have one pound of beads in there with a oust and it maintains humidity perfectly. Mostly boxes but 50-75 singles also.

I have it and it is perfect for my needs but it's in the basement and it doesn't get over 80 in there usually. So I'm really not much help and wasted all this time with this post.

As for shelves, I have heard over and over again in the two months since I've been here.

I have the edgestar 28, and i love it, i will warn you, the fan inside mine runs all the time. And mine stays around 60-63 degrees depending on what i have my temp at in my house. I also ordered drawers and shelves from Chasidor.com, Chas is a great guy he does most of his ordering on cigarasylum.com. Ok here is my opinion, if you don't want to spend the money on a vino, then def go with the edgestar. If i would have had them money i think in would have gone with the vinotemp 28 bottle. Its a little bigger from what i understand.

All in all though i love my edgestar, and already almost full... Another warning, once you have the space, all you want to do is fill it up. Which isn't a bad thing...LOL I will post some pics of mine. I def recomend the drawers, and i would recommend doing three large drawers and 2 small, i wish i would have gotten another large drawer. Make it is easier than dealing with boxes. Owell maybe in the future i will have Chas make me another large drawer.

My other advice is get 2lbs of heartfelt beads, i had one and def was not enough. Or i guess you could get some kinda automatic or electronic humidification. Thats my opinion.

Love mine. I've had a 28 for years and it is fantastic. I use an Oasis plus with it and it is pretty much maintenance free.

Love mine. I bought the 28 for $199 shipped. Just go ahead and get the 28 then you'll have room to grow into it.

I just got the EdgeStar 28 last month, you will need 2 lb's of beads.Temp is consistant at 60 and Hm is at 67. I am in Houston and got the EdgeStar for the same reason as you, the temp will be going up & up in Houston for the next several months ,so I figured I better do something now and not worry about my stogies.

Run a computer fan inside. You can get a fan from Radio Shack that runs on 120 volt and get a timer from GrowLight Express and have it run the fan about 15 min an hour. It will eliminate the condensation issue. I have a 48 bottle with 2 fans and it works in mine so there is no condensation.

Well to tell the truth I didn't use a 120 volt fan set up. I used 12volt dc with a converter since I have a local place that sells surplus computer equipment. But the set up is the same just no converter. I just snaked a cord through the back where the power cord exits. You can snake it through right next to the thermoelectric coolers or by the upper rear controls on yours, mine is a Haier 48 bottle compressor type.

Yes I have about a pound to keep the humidity level through the cabinet. The Set & Forget Humidity System keeps it pretty consistent so not a lot were needed.

I would have to agree with what everyone else is saying. The Edgestar 28 has the best price/space ratio when comparing all models. I would save up a little longer and go for the TWR282S.

Like jjon90, I am currently waiting on trays from Chuck. Everything has been up and running for a few weeks now. And even with only my boxes, and I couldn't be happier. If you have the cash, I would also get the temp control. To me it's well worth it, and seems to defeat the purpose without one. My experience with fans is that in order to be used effectively, they take up too much space. I haven't felt the need to install them.

Here is an email chuck sent me regarding this same question:

"........Back to point, A single tray is designed to slide into each slot in the unit. A double Tray uses 2 slots so you would only get 1 tray in every other slot. The amount of total trays depends on the combo of trays used. Starting at the bottom you could count up each slot and figure out the number based on the combo of sizes you are interested in. There are 12 slots in a standard 28 bottle unit.

Ah the how many will it hold conundrum, you good at Tetris? If yes, more than the guy who is bad at it. Count depends on RG of the cigars and length. A single tray will only hold 1 high or 2 if small RG. Average is about 20-35 cigars in the singles. Doubles will hold 3-4 high and I have people who are really good at cigar Tetris saying they get 150 cigars in a double. I doubt that, but easy 75-100, 125 maybe.

My “everyday smokes” tray is full of 5x50 and 6x42 cigars. When full to the rim after restocking I get 31 rows of 4 high. And that requires some very creative stacking"

while not an edgestar I do have a vinotemp that I use for storage. From time to time there has been condensation issues at the bottom near the drain hole so either put something there to catch it or put an empty box there to keep you from placing sticks there. I've heard of people having serious damage issues with not catching condensation in time.
