Don't

I do wonder if the cigar was not lit if it would have the same effect or if anything was added to the cigar as I cannot see this happening otherwise since it is organic material just like anything else.....

Anyone willing to give it a shot :)

Ok I can explain this, it is minerals that are on the leaf. Go get some frozen green beans and cook them in the microwave. It is mineral deposits on the item that causes the sparks in the microwave.

Works with a candle, too. I don't know all the science behind it, but the basic idea involves the burning material releasing plasma as it passes through the hot spots created by the standing waves. Plasma is basically conductive gas, hence the ball lightning.

There's a bunch of videos of the phenomenon on youtube.

Both of these are true but I think what we are seeing here is what Charles is talking about.

I never thought about doing this but good to know if I ever want to ruin a cigar and microwave at the same time.

Something about peeps in the microwave *really* freaks me out. I can't explain it.

For another interesting microwave game, try an old CD on high for 4-6 seconds with the room lights off. Even though it's a short run you may want to toss a glass of water in there with it so you don't burn out the magnetron. I've done it a few times and never hurt my microwave, but YMMV. Also, be aware it will smell bad and the CD will never play again.
