BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE
Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Wife and I were listening to the game on the way home from the daughters practice (no kidding).
When Aguilera f*cked up the anthem, I turned the channel.
Pretty much summed up the entire Super Bowl right then and there.
I didn't bother watching any of it.

I guess I'm missing something...who watches the Super Bowl to criticize the Anthem?
Sure, she messed up, but she was there, singing to hundreds of millions. Give the girl a break, she's been great, GREAT, to our troops if nothing else.
I'd like to hear some of her critic's attempts to sing it....actually, probably not.

I don't think she screwed up intentionally or through lack of preparation. I think it was nerves, which can actually be attributed to how honored she was and how important she understood it to be. I mean, here's a woman who's used to performing in front of massive live and televised audiences, and she screwed up the lyrics to (arguably) the most well-known song in America. That, coupled with the fact she does do a lot of shows for the military, tells me she just got nervous.

I heard a lot about how nobody can compare to Whitney's rendition in the '91 Super Bowl. I never knew this (from the article):

Back when football was about football? The Superbowl has become about everything but football.
I had to go the bathroom so I waited till it was about to cut to commercials to go and someone said to me "Where you going? You're going to miss the commercials!". And that's how I know the world is doomed.
Christina has an amazing voice. If she hadnt goofed up the line and if she hadnt gone falsetto on "land of the free" it would have been one of the best renditions ever.
As for the BEP's... not exactly mind blowing. Cookie cutter studio group that write catchy dance beats, thats where their talent lies. But honestly, when did we as a society start allowing ourselves to be entertained by those who lack the talent to perform live?

Really guys?!?!? Am I the only BOTL smart enough to know ahead of time the Super Bowl halftime show would be crap! Was I the only one who promptly turned channels at halftime to watch the 2011 Lingerie Bowl??? Pay per view cost was definitely worth it.

I am not a fan of the BEP, Fergie is ok at best and not bad to look at and I like the song she did on Slashes album.
I had left the room when the half time show was about to start, but was drawn back in when she tried to do the GnR song with Slash......
I sat watching the rest of the show praying William Hung would come out to save the day.

I really enjoyed watching the game, but was disappointed by Christina's screw up. She did a good job of continuing on and finishing strong. However, I do wish someone would just sing the freaking anthem for once. I am a professional "sound guy" and it always irks me that new age singers think it's more impressive to run up and down scales than it is to hold a note. If you want us to really hear your voice, hold those notes!
As far as the half-time show goes, I thought it was very visually interesting, but the guy running sound should be dragged out and hung. That being said, there is something to consider here:
For major events like the Super Bowl, there are two feeds run: one for the live audience in the stadium and one for the live audience at home. Unfortunately for us, we have absolutely no idea what the stadium mix sounded like... unless someone was there and cares to chime in... :halfgrinw
Now, given that, there should've been someone running just the television feed. Whoever was doing that will probably not get hired for a gig like this again. There is absolutely no excuse for the debacle that the tv mix was. The mix of the music sounded fine, but it didn't have ANY presence, especially in comparison with the vocals. There was no effect on most of the singers that reeeeeeeeeeeeally needed it (cough Fergie cough). A lot of effect might've saved our ears from Fergie's muggy, ugly voice. Mics were set at an audible level AFTER the singers began to sing and some simply never got heard.
What I heard during the half time show were A LOT of rookie mistakes that I used to make when I first started out. The main difference here is that I was not mixing the sound for the Super Bowl half-time show which was being sent to millions and millions of people. Next year, NFL, hire a television sound guy who knows what the hell he's doing. Hell, give me a call if you're that strapped.
I do have to say that I feel kind of bad for BEP. They're used to a lot of support from sound so that their natural, insubstantial voices don't get heard in their pure and unimpressive form and, during the half-time show, they did not get that support. Maybe this will send a message to people: don't believe that bands who over use effect are naturally talented. They're talent is in masking their inherent lack there-of.
To end with something positive: I had a blast watching the Super Bowl, if only the Steelers had pulled it off in those last seconds. Oh well, there's always next year!

I wasn't impressed with how she sang the Anthem. Sure she messed up and it can't be easy, but she's a professional...it's what she does. That aside, I hated how she sang it. I'd like for someone to just sing it, don't try to doll it all up, it's kick ass the way it is. As for the half time show...it was horrible, what 5 minutes of it I saw at least cause I went and took a dump. Not a big fan of half time shows. Also, what the hell was up with the commercials this year? There were a crap ton of Pepsi and Doritos commercials and hardly any good ones. Not that I watch the Super Bowl for the commercials, but I do like to see what advertisers have come up with.

I bet 95%-99% of Americans don't know the words to the National Anthem or America the Beautiful, so she is no different the rest of the posters in this thread except 1 or 2 who might know it and she is a professional singer who forgot her lines. Happens all the time, big deal.
