Dan, I love the idea and really love how it turned out!! I have an ashtray exactly like that. I'm gonna use your idea and convert mine at home. Is it as simple as paint it, add cigar labels, and clear with automotive clear? Are there any other tips?
If your ashtray has a good smooth finish already. No need to paint it first.
I used a Multi Purpose sealer from DecoARt as the glue to adhere the labels. Worked great. Then a very light scuff not to damages the labels, and clear coat.
This was my first one, and I did it pretty fast. It has been outside on my patio for a while.
