• BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

    creating a smooth blend

There's a good chance it's you. The palate is very affected by changes in the PH which is influenced throughout the day by what you eat and drink. This alludes to the importance of the PH of the cigars we roll. Too high PH (alkaline) and the cigar becomes harsh. This is an important role of the...

I wonder if they have tours? I'm going to Ybor in a few weeks. After going to Tabanero this would be a fun stop.

Just curious, what was the recipe of 'mojo' you're using?

The WLT... Ciabo Valley Vuelta Abajo Habano ligero and seco. Standard Dominican binder is pretty neutral. The Mata Fina wrapper is nice also. IMO.

The 'Mojo' is usually not done for the purpose of flavoring. However, some companies, like Drew Estate, do make flavored cigars as well. They will NOT disclose any of their recipe secrets. In the video you point to they are applying the mojo and then packing the tobacco away to age. After a...

    creating a smooth blend

I'm responding directly to the title of this thread 'creating a smooth blend' and the best way to get there is by using smooth/better tobacco. You can't get there by way of improving construction and making the cigar look pretty. If the tobacco is harsh then nothing you can do during...

As Tim Torres(Cuban roller) once said (and I believe he's right)..." a poorly rolled cigar using good tobacco will always be a better smoke than a well rolled cigar using lesser tobacco".

I never suggested that anyone use "that shit". I am stating a FACT that it is used throughout the ENTIRE tobacco industry (not just burley) to increase the burn rate of the leaf. Camacho is one cigar that it IS sprayed on. I can name many more but it seems to be a rather unpopular reality for...

Potassium nitrate is in the fertilizer and is already in the leaf. It makes for good burn quality as it is a natural oxidizer. As I mentioned the Camacho cigar I smoked had additional potassium nitrate added as an accelerant. It's a common product used throughout the tobacco industry.

Guess what... probably every cigar you've smoked has saltpetre in it. It's in the leaf. I'm simply letting you know that many cigar manufacturers use this product to improve the burn of the cigar. It's sucked up in the leaf by way of nitrates in fertilizers and makes good burning quality in the...

If your cigars burn well there would be no need to use it. There are formulas in old periodicals with mixing ratios if your cigar needed help to burn.

Saltpetre is used as an accelerant in many cigars. (used in fireworks). If a cigar is heavily 'petuned' or needs some help to give that razor sharp burn they use this stuff. I smoked a Camacho 'barrel aged' the other night and, when looking closely, could see little tiny sparkles along the...

Lol... that's exactly the response I had in mind! I think the concept of rolling your own cigars is too simple in it's basic form. That is... buy some tobacco, get all the tools, learn to roll and start rolling great cigars for super cheap. Nope. The missing link is thinking you can make great...

:) The funny thing is, these experiments take very little time. I can spray down enough leaf for 10 cigars in a matter of minutes. I don't even think about rolling/construction anymore. All my current enjoyment comes from developing new recipes.

Please don't take offense but... you did it wrong. The mold occured because it was too moist/wet. The water acts as a vehicle to lay on the flavor. Don't use any water! Try this on some of the Honduran. Take a small fine spray mister (2 oz.) In that bottle mix a full 1 oz bottle of vanilla...

The bitter taste is what I detest the most and if it starts out bitter it usually remains bitter no matter how long it's aged. This problem should be addressed but it's not. The focus of the cigar in this forum seems to be solely on the appearance. There is little to no...

Been doing that for years. Go for it! Using Dom ligero is not as strong as expected but I would be wary of all Nic ligero. Play with a blend. The double binder might cause a burn/tunnel problem. I always use the thinnest binder I can get away with and then try to find a nice dark ligero leaf...

Good advice! I find that when the moisture is removed properly the leaf actually shrinks down a bit and opens up the draw. Conversely, an overly moist cigar can swell to the point of splitting the wrapper and making a tight draw.
