• BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

    Tobacco Growers

I used two methods. First I built a box from styrofoam so it would hold heat. Then I installed a crock pot with water to provide heat and humidity. I could control the humidity with a vent at the top. I was aiming for a specific temperature and humidity that was optimum for fermentation...

    Tobacco Growers

Each 5 gal. pail grew a 6' tall plant. I was surprised at the amount of tobacco from each plant. The pails made it easy to control the amount of sun because I could move them. It also allowed me to control the amount of water and fertilizer. Fertilizer was important since tobacco is a heavy...

    Tobacco Growers

I don't grow now but I did several years ago. I didn't have a good spot to make a garden so I grew mine in pails so I could move them around. It worked well. I live in Ontario so it is possible to grow tobacco without a long growing season.

    Pressed cigars

Yeah, that's the one. I thought is was a Quesada but when I looked on-line I couldn't find it. Anyone know more about the strange shape?

    Pressed cigars

I was in a B&M recently (a very rare occurrence) and I saw a box of cigars that were referred to as "pressed". I don't recall the brand. They were tapered at both ends and the center was flattened like it had been run over by a car. It was the craziest shape I've seen. Has anyone seen these...

Cigars for your non cigar friends

I leave my premiums in the humidor and I pull out a selection of all the rest, good and bad. I let them pick and I educate them about their choice if they are interested. In my opinion those who are not aficionados choose based first on the size then on the band.

    Just arrived today!

Very nice everyone! I am jealous. I have noticed that photos taken with a flash make cigars look more mottled than in person. All the boxes of Cohiba's or Monte's I have seen are beautifully consistent in color. The photos make them look quite splotchy.

    Fake?

All the fakes I've smoked from Cuba (not elsewhere) have been pretty good.

    Is this a problem?

I also freeze every cigar before it goes into my humidor. It takes about 1 minute to put the cigars into a zip-lock and drop them in the freezer for a few days, but the piece of mind lasts forever.

    Too much variety

In the "Let's See How You Store Your Cigars" thread there are great photos of huge collections, some that would put the local B&M to shame. For the fist 10 years that I was serious about cigars I was all about trying as many different cigars as possible. Several years later I find myself not...

    Leaf Fermenting

I grew some tobacco a few years back and fermented it. It was an adventure. I smoked some unfermented leaves so I could compare. The unfermented are VERY harsh. All the leaves I've bought taste OK so I'm sure all the leaves from the suppliers are fermented. I tried a few ways to ferment the...

    Videos

I found this fascinating. He is promoting the fact that his cigars are more healthy (?) because they don't have chemicals. His description of the irresponsible way other countries use chemicals sounds a bit over-the-top. His explanation of why his cigars are not any more prone to beetle...

    I love punching!

Yeah, twisting with a gentle push is the way to go. I've screwed up a guillotine cut many times but never a punch because the cap stays intact.

    I love punching!

I started getting serious about cigars about 10 years ago. Like most people I cut my cigars. I tried a cigar punch on some smaller ring gauge but never gave it much thought since the cutting was always a ritual that I enjoyed. Recently I have started using a punch on all my cigars and I love...

    Xikar Boveda Packs

Please ignore my previous posts arguing about "absolute moisture content". While my explanation was accurate, I have since gone back to review a thread I started 2 years ago on the same subject. I had forgotten that the humidification of tobacco is not so straight forward and that RH is the...

    Xikar Boveda Packs

I agree. So if your Boveda packs are holding it at 65% and your hygrometer is reading 65% then how is that affected by temperature? As you say, air holds less water when it is cooler so if the temperature went up and it was still 65% rh in your humidor then there would actually be MORE water...
