  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

They're gonna have to expand the list - there were just a ton of great cigars that came out this year. You could fill that list with just new releases.

The RP Decade is good... But with all the stuff out there, Rocky doesn't come close to making my list.

Were the Tat Frank, Black, El Tuinfudor etc. even reviewed by CA? I don't follow, but didn't think they reviewed much of the super small batch stuff. For me Frank is a must in the top 5.

yah, frank and black don't have a chance of making it. but they were definitely in my top 5. some of their other picks are just plain mystifying til you look at the ads.

Yeah your right I thought they reviewed the Frank this year but couldn't find it on the recent Cigar insider tastings. I knew the blacks were out because they state "they try all cigars even small limited productions for there 700+ tastings a year". But given the fact that Pete gives the blacks away I think its to small of a small batch.
Well it will still be interesting whatever they choose.

It wouldnt be my choice but id be willing to bet The RP Decade will be in the top 3, Cigar Aficionado gave it a 95 rating and seems to have a love fest with the brand.
Agreed, we are going to see the Decade in the Top 10, if not in the Top 3. I second the Fuente OpusX and think that we will see the Padron 80th up top.

I'm always curious what oddball smokes are going to make it.

Squid® pays absolutely zero attention to what they think at CA... My opinion and the opinions of fellow smokers on such places as BoTL are far more real-world and worth much more in my opinion.

Along with something Padron and something that Pete did, illusione must make another appearance. It is quite amuzing though based on what ads are in the magazine and who makes the Top 25. i.e. Alec Bradley a 95 on the Tempus. I have never smoked one, based on the fact that the few I have talked to that have say they are dog rockets. It's a fun list to peruse, but I wouldn't use it as a point of reference.

I know that we all should take lists and reviews with a grain of salt, but I personally am thankful for CA's lists and have utilized them in the past quite a bit. I don't always agree of course, but if some "pros" rate a cigar that I've never tried (or sometimes heard of) at a 94 or something, then it makes my list of sticks to try. There are a few cigars that I've tried simply because they were on "the list" and I loved them (Tatuaje, Oliva, etc.).

I'm going to buy the issue next week.

Now, we know that the RP Decade and the AB Tempus will both be in the top 10 simply because of their astronomical ratings this year. I"m thinking that a Tat will make the list, though it's tough to say which. I also think the My Father and Cabaiguan will make the list.

Wouldn't you like to know?
I look but don't pay too much attention. They have rated some of my favorites way lower. The el triunfadors were rated in cigar insider but not well. They also gave gold medals and some of my favorite trinis didn't do well either. But it did help me in finding out about Dion's stuff before I found here. They also loved the cohiba maduros fresh which was the cigar I found in most need of some age.

When I worked at a B&M it was interesting that about a week or two after the Top 25 issue comes out we start getting phone calls for cigars we never carried because of no interest from the customers. If you open the issue you can see all the cigars you're getting the calls on. Interesting.....

btw Our stores were well stocked and we never had even half the cigars that make that list.

I'll tell ya what Harvard, I realize that taste is subjective, and what some folks love others will hate. Having said that, in my personal opinion, the AB Tempus is one of the best cigars I've smoked, and if you've not tried it because of other peoples' opinions you're missing out. PM me your address, I'll shoot you a couple, and if you don't like them you aren't out anything.

I tried the Tempus based on the rating it got and was sorely dissappointed but I also tried the Casa Magna based on their rating and really liked it so I mainly look for high rated cigars that sell for $6 or less. There's no shortage of great cigars for $25 or less so it's not that interesting. Also when you see your favorite cigars get medicore ratings it makes thier ratings seem very questionable. I don't think that the tastings are completely blind even though they claim to be and obviously the top 25 aren't so advertising has to come into play.
