  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Have a couple of questions about the recent release of the 8-5-8 rosado sungrown. Any help would be greatly appreaciated. Here goes...

Do the 8-5-8 rosado sg's have the same wrapper as the magnum R series?

Are the 8-5-8 rosado sg's going to be regular production or is this a one off run?

Also, for anyone who has tried them, how are they?

Thanks in advance.

I've been more impressed with the Magnum R's than the 8-5-8 rosados. The 858R's have been just "ok" and not anywhere near the originals, IMO.

The 858s are good. They are still supposed to be limited release, unlike the Rosado line, which is supposed to be regular release. That is what I have heard.

I have tried the 8-5-8 Rosado Sun Grown and liked it very much. I have a couple of the "Rosarios" sitting and acclimating. Maybe get to them next week or so.

i've been hearing that the new magnum Rs are very nice. have only heard so-so reports about the 858 Rosados.

i've been told the wrappers are different, but not sure how that can be, as they are both tauting the whole "rosado sungrown" thing. remembver that a rosado is merely a shade of a sungrown wrapper...

you can also expect that the overall composition of the 2 blends (magnum/858) is just that, 2 diffeerent blends. they are not the same cigar.

when comparing the 2 different lines side by side, the wrappers do not have the same color, but that doens't mean they both aren't rosado sungrowns. as i said, rosado is just a shade, and there's no way that they can be exactly the same throughout the entirety of both releases.

i cannot comment on the regularity of the 858 release. i would expect that it's a one time thing and not a regular producgtion. however, the megnum series is regular production to my knowledge, which lends to the belief that they have a steady supply of rosado wrapper leaves, which to my knowledge, the scarcity of such leaf was the reason for the extreme limited nature of the 858 rosado.

NOTE*** this entire post is pure conjecture on myh part, as i've not smoked either of the 2 blends mentioned...magnum and 858rsg. i've got them, just haven't smoked them yet.

personally, i much preferred the 858. the rosario/rosado/rutabega whatever was as sweet as a swisher. reminded me of the oliva. i'm sure they can't all be that way, but the first one i had sure was. the 858 may not live up to the mythic or, but it's still a damn fine smoke.

I can't answer your specific question, but I've had one of each. The 858r is a little 'dirtier' tasing with a bit more spice & punch. The Rosario seemed more refined, slightly lighter bodied (perhaps only because of the ring). I expect the Rosario to be fantastic with a bit of age, it seemed to get a little bitter in the final third but overall was a great smoke.

Just to follow up...I tracked down some of the 8-5-8 RSG's and picked them up after work. Smoking one right now and I am very impressed (although I must admit, I had low expectations). Starts off slow, but at about a half inch in it really opens up. Paid 5.50 a stick (+tax). Wish these were regular production...
