A Different Type of Revolution.... 20 years later.

If you are in my age group... and ever donned flannel, work boots, torn up jeans, and wore a nearly greasy, stringy hairdo, you might already know the importance of a particular anniversary tomorrow.

On September 24, 1991, an album was released that spurned an entire revolution in what kind of music people were listening to. At the time, no one really understood what was happening. There was the strange video, with nearly unintelligible lyrics. I don't think anyone knew how epic the release was going to be. It wasn't the first release from this band, but they did something special on this album that thrust them, almost painfully for some of the members, into the country's musical spotlight.

Here's to Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic (and producer Butch Vig) for helping redraw the musical map, and helping me through my later teenage years, and beyond...

Great post. Thankful Grohl went on to start the Foo Fighters. I like them more and more each time I listen to their songs.

I'll give Nirvana their due to some respect. But being from that generation... I can't say that they 'spurned an entire revolution...' They were immensely popular, they mainstreamed our generations version of the 'sub-culture'. But they were one of many that took part in the movement. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, or Mother Love Bone...STP, Blind Mellon, Alice in Chains. Just so happens that the lead singer didn't go out with such a bang (sorry too soon?) for the other bands. But, regardless... this is a turning stone with the Nevermind album turning 20... it means I'm really feeling old, thnx

It single handly changed my life. It opened my ears to respect all types of music. It opened my mind to accept others regardless of differences. Nirvana was just what we needed; a way to channel fear, anger, awkwardness, shyness, and the basic pitfalls of a living teenage tragedy into something beautiful and meaningless at the same time. It took away the burdens of trying to grow up too soon and too fast into a world that cared less if we ever did. God I wish it was that simple now.

One of my favorite bands. I can honestly say that to this day, Kurt Cobain's was the only celebrity death I ever got really saddened by. Their music helped me through some pretty rough, depressing years.

Yes, Nirvana wasn't the only band of that style, but it was Nevermind that opened the door for so many other Seattle bands to enter the mainstream. Well, that and the movie Singles.

remember this day quite well.... twas in hollywood on the sunset strip. Excel was to play the whiskey a go go that eve, i was early and needed to kill some time, so i mosey on over to tower records.
the whole time their, they're jamming smells like teen spirit continously over and over and well, over. so im like ummm wow nice tune...

and whos by himself in the reggae aisle picking up cd's?? yep Bill from bill and teds bogus journey! so we discuss how most excellent the song is. a bunch of girls in the store were like gawking at us, or him, the whole time!

EXCEL was most righteously amazing but thats another story lol!!

John Lennon, Bob Marley & Stevie Ray Vaughn's deaths moved me a lot more than Cobain.
