  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I have the Xikar Trezo and I probably wouldn't recommend it. One jet is a little finicky, plus triple jet is a bit much IMO.

Ronsons don't quit you just have to purge them with a Pen cap every other time.(and good fuel) For 3.50 if it ever breaks I'll buy another ten pack off ebay for 40.00 dollars. Hell think Im gonna do that anyway.

I am another one for the Ronson Jetlite for the price and lack of issues this lighter has given me it cant be beat. I have many that are over $100's and they ar not worth crap even using the gas they recomend.

What kind of butane are you using? I used cheap butane from the drug store before in my
Xikar and it got clogged and wouldnt light. Your description almost sounds like my experience, thats why I ask. Ive been using butane from my B&M now and havent had a problem with either of my Xikar lighters since. Just a thought.
I used to have the same issues with lighters and some will just stop working or start giving you problems because of some very simple causes.

1. Cheap butane ( fuel )
2. Not purging the ligher before re-filling.
3. Not screwing the insert towards the - all the way.
4. Overcharging the lighter and blowing out the seal.

One can take the lighter apart and go thru it and repair them if you own a lighter that you paid dearly for but if it's a Ronson or something else at a low price point just get another one. I use the same Ronson I have had for a couple of years and it works every time because of the procedures I use above.
This is the key. Use triple refined fuel and purge it every time before you refill it.

I've had an atoll/brizard and co lighter for a couple years and it shows no sign of stopping.

Fuel Fuel Fuel... use only triple filtered and you'll have less issues.

Purge the air from the unit every couple of fills... and get some canned air to take to the burner every few weeks.

I have a dozen different lighters and only use triple filtered fuel... I can grab any of these, some after years of use and count on them to perform.

Just my routine and experience. The lighters I reach for most often just fit my hand the best and none of them were expensive.

Just buy a xikar and you won't ever have a problem because if the lighter sh*ts out you can just send it back. They have the best return policy ever!

Just bought another one of these.

In clear, it's easy to see the fuel level - tank holds a lot - always lights, basically a tool.

Very true...problem is you will have to send it back. They take a $3 lighter, and charge $35 for it. If you replace it 5 times they are still making money...yes the policy is good, but having to use it every other month sucks. Just my experience...I will not buy a Xikar lighter again.

Good info here, and I see several following comments about purging the lighter before refilling, but I am not sure exactly how to do that. :scratchhe

Use something to push down the little tube in the center of the valve until nothing comes out anymore.
Thats correct, but never ever use a pencil!!

By purging you eliminate the possibility of getting air bubbles in your lighter....no air bubbles means it's full to it's capacity!

Cool - thanks, tmoney and Larry. Seems pretty simple, now that I think about it. :)

I was having some intermittant issues with my JetLites, and I'm sure this will fix it. Only trouble is they run out of fuel so fast, I'd ideally like to be able to keep them topped off at all times. A fuel meter would help with knowing where you are, but hey, for $3, what are you gonna do? Guess I'll just take 2 wherever I go.

Dupont X-tend. Worth every penny, especially if you buy it on sale (Mike's usually has 1 or 2 colors at close to half price). Lights the first time every time and holds lots of fuel. Follow everyone's instructions, especially about using only good butane (refined 5x if possible, 3x at a minimum).

Thanks,

seriously?

i have had a xikar for over 5 years now. never once have i even had an issue with lighting. it lights every time i try. never misses ever. i smoke cigars about 3-4 times a week.

i think many problems people have are caused by the care they are or are not giving to the lighter.
