  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Note: This was a previous review that I've done, and there are a few others I will be posting at some point today. Hope you enjoy, and feedback via reply or PM is always welcomed.

Alec Bradley Prensado
Size: Torpedo (6.1x52)
Wrapper: Honduran Trojes Corojo
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Honduran Trojes, Nicaraguan
Price: $10.50 - B&M Purchase.

Appearance: The wrapper is a nice dark brown color, with some hints of black marbling over the surface of the leaf. There are a few large veins on the wrapper, but for the most part it is smooth and clean. The Prensado are all boxed pressed.

Pre-Light The cigar is firm from the half way point to the cap, but a bit softer when squeezed near the foot of the cigar.
Aroma: The wrapper gives off the smell of hay, backed by some sweet floral hints and a touch of leather. The foot gives off a nice soil and leather combination, lacking the sweetness provided by the wrapper.
Cold Draw: The cold draw is a little snug. The primary flavor here is slightly sweetened hay, and some earthy soil tones right behind it. There is a small hint of spice in the background also.

1st: Initial draw gives a nice bit of pepper. The strength fades into more of a spice that doesn't linger on the palate. Still a touch of sweetness here, and leather is most prominent. Dark tobacco comes in shortly, and becomes the dominating flavor. The first third remains a prominent dark tobacco, with only hints of the leather presented initially. The retrohale offers up some nice spice hints, as well as some cedar playing in the background.

2nd: The spice is smooth, and remains a mild background flavor here. A touch of cinnamon presents itself, but is cloaked rather heavily by that dark tobacco flavor. The retrohale here offers up stronger spices, and the cedar is coming out heavily in the nose as well.

3rd: The profile remains the same here, tobacco backed by spice. There are still some hints of leather and the occassional bite of cedar but they are faint background players. The tobacco and spice have toned down to a medium level here, less upfront in their flavor than in the first and second.

Impressions: The Prensado was awarded the 2011 Cigar of the Year award, and seems fairly highly rated across various platforms. - I try not to go into a cigar rated highly with expectations, but I was a little disappointed in the Prensado. I don't have a ton of experience with Alec Bradley, but I can say I enjoyed the Black Market far more than this cigar. The burn was spot on and never faltered, and the cigar has a very nice appearance to it overall.. The flavors just seemed a bit flat and remained one sided throughout the entire cigar.

Slightly older thread here, but I actually had the exact opposite experience with the Prensado. I really enjoyed the flavors, but I've had some terrible burns on mine. Mine have been a battle to keep lit and keep a straight burn.

I think with the Prensado's, the vitola plays a big role. I had a Churchill and it was amazing. I have yet to get to my robusto, but i'll update on that size when I smoke it.

I need to revisit this cigar. I smoked the Churchill I want to say February of 2012. It did not impress me but at the same time I had only been smoking cigars for a few months and had not really developed any sort of palate. Thanks for the review!

I smoked a bunch of the Churchills and I'm still amazed this was CA's cigar of the year! Let one rest for 2 years and was still harsh and burned like crap.

ps, sorry to anyone I bomb this to!

Yeah, I've got the robustos. I smoked the first one out on a beach, so I knew the wind would be an issue. Got home, smoked the next one in my three seasons room, where I always smoke. The burn was just as bad. I think I've got 3 or 4 left. I might try another one this week to see how it goes.

It's not the prensados, I've had problems with the tempus line also. It's a shame because I like everything else about them.

Have had plenty of AB's and I love them. So far I have not had one that let me down.

The MAxx and Tempus maduro are just awesome.

I decided to smoke one of the box pressed robustos last night just to see if I had the same experience as before. I didn't take pictures, but here's what happened.

First light, the burn takes off about 1/2" up the cigar on a vein, and I'm thinking "oh, here we go". I get into the cigar, and the burn corrects itself. There are absolutely no problems until I get to about the halfway point, and I take the band off.

A couple of minutes later, the cigar goes out. So I've been working on other stuff, and think that maybe I hadn't paid enough attention to it. I relight, and notice that the wrapper is burning slower than the filler, by about 3/8", a problem I've had with every other Prensado I've smoked. So I torch the wrapper down, and start smoking again. I had really good smoke production for a bit, and then the cigar starts going out again a few minutes later. I start puffing on it like a madman trying to get it going, no dice. So I relight again. It's good for fifteen minutes or so, and it goes out AGAIN. I'd been taking draws every thirty seconds to a minute at this point. It's not like I ignored it.

I just don't get what's wrong with these. This particular stick has been in my humi since last July, stored between 62-70 humidity (still using foam, gotta get rid of that crap - I know). It was at 65 last night. I think these things are just poorly made. I would believe the rumor that the CA reviewers only smoke the first inch or so, because it's a fine cigar, until halfway down.

I have found that if you get a Prensado that is constructed well and burns properly the flavor and complexity that you experience is worthy of a cigar of the year. The problem is in my experience only about 1 out of 4 seem to burn and draw right. Give the Black Market a try in Toro. They are more consistent and are truly delicious.

I've smoked two Prensados out of a fiver I bought 3 months ago and I don't remember them. (What does that tell you?) I had an el Rey del Mundo- oscuro yesterday and can't stop thinking about it! The A/B I've liked best so far is the sun-burned; perty tasty!

I know this is an old thread but in case someone peers into it as I did, I have to update my comment. I smoked another of my Prensados last night after it had been in my wineador for 4weeks and it was a perfect experience. No draw or burn issues, and though a tad milder than I like, it tasted wonderful (I ain't one to toss off a lot of "nuance adjectives" like I'm some connoisseur). I have two left out of that fiver and I'm looking forward to them now.
