On an August morning in 1978, French filmmaker Claude Lelouch mounted a gyro-stabilized camera to the bumper of a Ferrari 275 GTB and had a friend, a professional Formula 1 racer, drive at breakneck speed through the heart of Paris. The film was limited for technical reasons to 10 minutes; the course was from Porte Dauphine, through the Louvre, to the Basilica of Sacre Coeur.

No streets were closed, for Lelouch was unable to obtain a permit.

The driver completed the course in about 9 minutes, reaching nearly 140 MPH in some stretches. The footage reveals him running real red lights, nearly hitting real pedestrians, and driving the wrong way up real one-way streets.

Upon showing the film in public for the first time, Lelouch was arrested. He has never revealed the identity of the driver, and the film went underground until a DVD release a few years ago.

Now, thanks to the miracle of the Internets, you can watch it in your browser.

Edited to fix link

the bulletin board software just abbreviates the URL, but in this case you can still click the link

Amazing this guy didn't hit anyone, or anything!

Definitely a cool video! That guy had some sticky tires to make it around those curves at the speed he was going!

I have taken several courses in high speed pursuit driving. That guy scared the hell out of me. No way I could keep up with him.

Now that was fkin awesome. The last 3 min are the best.

I thought for sure he was going to nail that bus...and I have no idea how he made some of those turns....simply amazing.

I did notice that when people saw him coming they slowed down and moved over to the right...I wish people would learn to do that here!!

So WTF are you guys using to watch this?

I've tried numerous times to download ... but it seems to take forever (10 minutes at least) and then just locks up my IE or Netscape session. I have no problems watching any other video. :dunno:
