Agreed I have rooted and unlocked my last 3 phones and your not even close to using it to its full capabilities until then.

+1. I would also like to know. I probably won't attempt to do it since it's a work phone, but just replaced by crackberry with an Android and have been impressed.

Just Google Cyanogen Mod. That will give you a good idea. The best benefits are a better running phone because of removing all of the bloatware plus the capability of creating a free wifi hotspot for your laptop. There is also smaller perks like more customization of your phone and being able to copy and backup all your apps.

Plus with the the excess crap gone you get way better battery life. But you have to do it right or you can brick your phone.

Love my EVO 3D....however I'm pissed that it cannot be truly rooted because the current hboot version hasn't been cracked. So it's stock for me...as I don't want to use HTC's unlocker...as that would mean they would know my phone is unlocked and would void the warranty. Plus it isn't a full unlock.
