I'm not really a collector... I drink the bottles I buy. However, I heard a slick story of an older gentleman at my B&M that had a very old bottle of scotch that he only had two drinks out of ever.

His father bought it, and they shared a drink from it when my buddy's first son was born. Twenty something years later (and long after his father had passed), my buddy poured him and his son a drink from it. He then gave it to his son a few years later as his son's wife was due to give birth to their first son.

I thought this was a great idea since the only other thing I was going to pass down to my son is credit card debt.

Anyone else do this? For significance sake, it puts me in the market for a 33 year old scotch distilled in 1976 yet bottled in 2009. Any ideas where to locate one?

I've always wished I had bought a bottle of wine when we got married and a 10 year old bottle of scotch when my kids were born.

Good story but I wouldn't really trust it. Scotch doesn't continue to age out of the barrel and there's a small chance it'll oxidize over time once opened. Would also have to make sure the cork doesn't touch the alcohol for extended periods of time, etc. etc. If it were me I'd buy a box of cigars from that year or a bottle of vintage port / wine.

Only whiskey I collect is in my belly and only for a few hours. I have a couple of friends that are true collectors and have over 150 different bottles. They generally buy 2 bottles of everything. 1 to sit and 1 to try. Even the ones they try, usually don't get emptied very quickly. They have some that have been open for 5 years now and taste completely fine.

I have dated bottles for every year I have been married, plus a couple of other important years.

I also have several bottles of each of my favorites: Laphroiag, Imperial, etc.

I am saving up for a bottle from 1970.

I was going to suggest some Scotch porn posts, but LigaFanBoy's collection might make me cry.

He didn't say it aged for better or worse over the time he shared it. The gist was that the grandson will someday share a drink with the great grandad.

Go check the Scotch Porn thread I made to see my collection. Nothing crazy except for the number of bottles.
