Im looking at getting a block of ambrosia maple and carving it out into an ashtray. Most likely a bigger block with a hold on each side for a cigar. Id like to cover it in a thick clear coating to keep the ash from damaging it. What should I use?
Any woodworkers around?

It basically started out as a split log. Like the one on the right.
My dad and I roughed out an octagonal shape with a band saw then moved it over to a lathe to do all the shaping and sanding. It's finished with wood turners wax.I forget which one, but there are may food safe waxes out there.
Tools involved were an plane, to get a nice flat surface to start with, a band saw for roughing in, a lathe for shaping and a forstner bit for cutting the cigar rests.

I just saw that ashtray he posted this morning, it's beautiful.
In highschool wood shop I made an ash tray out of maple. I sealed it with deck sealant. My step Dad still uses the friggin thing. 9 years later and a pack of cigarettes a day.
