My sons starter on his 1995 Honda Civic died. I have no clueof the engine size to by the part. (if it makes a diference) The engine was replaced by a mechanic that we have lost touch with. Is there a way to tell what size the engine is?

My understanding is that every engine has some sort of code either engraved or badged on it somewhere...Like an identification number that you can Google once you find it. (Kinda like a VIN number on a car) Good luck!

Looks like 40 nailed it......

The other option is to see if there is a part number on the starter. If the starter is the original part it should be real easy to cross reference.

I'lll look for the numbers. I'ts a 4 cylinder so I hope the plates in the same place. Worst case is pull the starter and take it to a parts store I think.
I haven't turned a wrench in a long time. But this looks easy enough to save the 200 dollar labor cost lol.

40 got it. All civics are 4 cylinder, the difference is between SOHC and DOHC, then displacement.

The engine code indicates displacement. Example, B16=1.6L, etc.

Pull the starter and bring it in along with the engine code. Bringing the part in makes for only going once.

I thought half the fun of any project was 14 trips to the relevant store (home depot, autozone, etc). I always factor in the time I estimate it will take to do the work, plus an extra 6 hours in home depot trips, haha
My wife loves to tease me about this syndrome. "It's just a 15 minute job, right babe?"
I love her, but it's that wit that brought me in that makes me want to punch her gorgeous teeth in sometimes.

There ya go. So at the parts store just tell them it's for a d16z6 engine. You can probably find youtube videos as well to help guide you. (Every car has their tricks)

Yup, any parts guy can look it up from there. For a starter you'll also need to tell them Manual or auto trans, but that should be it.

Starters are usually a little easier to get to, if it was an alternator then you'd really be in for some fun. Usually those engine bays are so cramped it's impossible to get your hand in there. Good luck.

Autozone sold us the wrong starter so I took the old one out. Had some issues with getting the main bolts out but the job is half done. Now to get the right starter.
