  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Anybody ever try this cigar? My son is due next month and I would like to buy some cigars to give out. Nobody I plan on giving them to is a true cigar aficionado so I don't want to drop a lot on them. If the consensus is that these suck, what do you brothers recommend?

I put the AF Breva somewhere in the top 5 worst cigars I've ever smoked. Almost any budget long filler cigar is better IMO. If the persons you intend to give them out to are known to enjoy a cigar then I'd say no, otherwise yes.

It's not a great cigar but its not the worst either. If you want to smoke one cigar to commemorate your sons birth while giving the others away is probably a good idea. After he is born and you get some time to yourself, smoke a premium cigar,,,savor the day and make a memory out of each special cigar you smoke. That is what I do and I can tell you what the memory was and what cigar was smoked at the time. Makes for a great way to instill those good times and the cigar that went with it.

Good advice. I plan on smoking a tat black to celebrate and will give the Fuentes out. I have been waiting a while to smoke it. Crypto Sailor gifted me the black a while back and I have been saving it for this occasion.

Curly head deluxe might not be bad for the novice cigar smokers. A little more expensive would be Hemingway short stories. Also look at maybe some of the seconds that you find on some sites, ie Rocky or Perdomo.

Also, I don't know where you live or if you're a US citizen, but you might think about getting a box of cigars from a certain island that are box dated with the month/year of his birth. I've heard of people doing that (not stateside of course) and smoking one a year on their kid's birthday. On the 18th you could even share one with him.

RyJ makes an "It's A ..." line also. I wouldn't call them great, but easily found. Good luck with the search- splurge on yourself!

You can buy some really good bundle cigars and have custom bands made. I brother from another board sent out cigars to all of the members on a cigar with custom bands made.

Here is the way I see it:

The novelty of handing out cigars at the birth of a child is simply that, a novelty. Whether your friends or family only smoke a cigar at the birth of the child or they smoke quality cigars daily, then the AF is excelent choice at 29.95 a box. It may not be a great cigar that will capture there memory and captivate their enthusiasm for cigars, but hey you are the one having to pay for this baby. You could of handed them a King Edward and they would have been just as proud to get it. Hell most people I know take them and never smoke them, kind of like their little keepsake of your childs birth. My point is, I would not go all out on buying cigars to hand out, I think the brevas are an excellent choice and value given the price and everyone will be pleased to get them, cigar afficinado or not. That is my 0.02 on the matter.

As a suggestion, hand out cigars you would smoke and that look great. I recommend La Aroma de Cuba. Beautiful cigar and label. Nice smoke, reasonable price. another is the Fonseca Magna. Very good cigar. I f you give out bottom rung stuff, they may smoke a little throw it away and retain the thought that cigars suck. Give them a decent smoke and who knows, you may gain a cigar buddy.

Give out nice stuff. You will feel great.

Thanks for the input guys. I really don't think those I will be handing them to will know the difference between a good cigar and a bad one. I would love to hand out some great cigars, but I am on a tight budget. Thanks for all your suggestions, and I'll try and find the middle ground.

if you like fuente, hand out 858's only a couple of bucks a stick. unless you plan on handing out a shit load. They are good smokes and you can pick them up at a lot of places cheap.

That's what I was trying to say, though a lot less eloquently.

Well, I just wanted to give an update. My son was born on Jan. 7th at 1:02 in the morning. We were not expecting him to come until the 16th. Unfortunately I didn't get the sticks I ordered to hand out on his birthday until 2 days later. Here's the little guy posing.
