New never tried cigar review
Alrighty. I would like to start off by saying that I would have never expected a review of a cigar to be so...in depth. I would also like to preface this review with a warning: I smoke my cigars rather slow.
Cigar: see opening post
Vitola: Perfecto
Size: 6 X 47 rg
Smoke time: 8:30pm-10:44pm
Drink paired with cigar: dark roast coffee with cream & sugar
Construction:
Well rolled, not a squishy spot on the thing. It was a bit veiny, but nothing that I would call obtrusive. Upon cutting the cap I found a tight draw, but that was due to the nipple foot that I did not cut. I was unsure weather or not to cut the foot or not, as this was my first perfecto that had an opening in the end, so I left it alone to see what it would burn like upon lighting.
Pre-light:
Aroma of light tobacco and slight almonds/nugat like the smell in a snickers bar, but this was very faint.
Opening burn:
As stated above I did not cut the foot which turned out to be a big mistake as I had a hard time drawing and getting any smoke what-so-ever, but did get enough to keep the stick lit. I must say that this was a testement to the build quality of this cigar.
First third:
Once the burn continued into the main portion of the cigar, the draw opened up to being just a bit tighter than pulling through a straw: I got enough resistance to consider this almost perfect.
Once the draw fixed itself, I had flavors reminicent of a J.Fuego Origen Original, but smoother and lighter (better). The retrohale was a bit harsh with loads of pepper and heavy cedar. Then after about an inch into this thing it continued with the smooth character into a slight almond flavor with some deep wood notes mixed in: like oak but not up front or very noticable, I really had to concentrate to figure out how to define that slight flavor. Now it started to remind me of a Tat Artista.
The only drawback here was that I could not keep any moisture in my mouth as this stick dried me out.
Second third:
At about 2.5 inches in I picked up some slight coffee with a touch of cream type sweetness, where it isn't sweet, just earthy to the point your mouth starts to water. I imagine this is when the tars started to build up and the maduro taste gets more prevelent. The almond flavor subsided, but the oak taste was still in the background lingering.
The retrohale now produced a smooth nugatty cream-like sensation, it was like exhaling air that is saturated with rain water...I love that heavy air feeling. For 2 puffs I got what I search for in every full bodied cigar; that dark cherry like tanic bitterness that you get in a Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon. I get that sometimes in more full bodied cigars, but this was medium with that great shot of tannins that got my attention, but alas it left as fast as it came. At this point in the cigar I was losing any flavor that the coffee drink I had been sipping on gave me, as the cigar turned fuller bodied and coated my palate every puff. Delicious !
The only problem is that the damn thing won't hold an ash more than an inch, I had to be vigilant but lost the battle and ashed on my pants twice...
Final third:
Dark tobacco that has been aged well and a white chocolate creamyness that coated the mouth; not sweet but light and airy. As this stick got to about an inch left, it decided to turn itself into an entirely different experience. Heavy meaty goodness with rich rich rich tobacco flavors. Mix that with a smooth vanilla retrohale and you can imagine how happy I was. I could not hold onto this thing anymore as I almost burnt my nose trying to hold onto it upright so ash wouldn't fall off, but what a great ending to this thing.
In closing I would like to thank Brent: BDC30+ for this new stick, it was sent with my hat. I would classify this as medium all the way, with a slight kick into full in the last 3\4 inch.
Rating: 9.1
Buy again: Yes, it was a beautiful stick that would be excellent to smoke around others, and easily a wonderful medium bodied.
Buy a box: At this time I have too many other options in the cigar brands that have not hit these lips, I cannot settle with this one just yet. I would recommend them though.
Thanks for reading this long review, I didn't think it would take that long, but I guess it's better than just saying it was good
