  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

So I took a practice ASVAB today, and pretty much got my ass kicked. Of course, I do not know how I did relative to others. I have a good GPA in college and consider myself to be decently intelligent, but this test was very difficult for me. I got a 100 on both word knowledge and paragraphs, but I was lost when it came to electrical circuits and mechanical design. Anyone have any advice on how to study up for this thing? I averaged my scores as a 60 :/

I served with several people who scored less than 40.

If I'm correct, you can buy test preparation books at any local book store. I sure you can find one at the local library. Better than that, your recruiter should have one in his office.

I took this thing in 10th grade, 1994. I thought I was doing a good thing, when it came around to the results I was only told, "The Air Force has your scores." I thought it was something great, maybe I was a genious or something, turned out I took it too early. My senior year in highschool I went to the Marine recruiter, and being overweight I asked him one question, "Is there such a thing as the fat mans platoon," he told me they would put me on a diet and get me down to weight and then we could talk about joining. I came from a long line of military service, in fact I am the only one in my family that has not served. My cousin was the last, and he is a Marine, I wanted to follow in his footsteps. It never happened.

Off of my ramble, just be yourself and take the test.

I did well on everything but that same subject as you, in which I scored a 17 out of 100 ... Yep, that's right, 17%. I can't tell the difference between a camshaft and a cupholder, Apparently, lol.

I did very well on mine. Cannot remember details as it was almost 20 years ago, However it still did not keep me from flunking out of Nuke school. Bone up on mechanics. Pick up a basic electricity book. keep trying the practice quizes.. Good luck and good job

I only got one question wrong on the ASVAB.

But even after about 6 months of really working hard to get my measurements right, I still came in too big in the belly (or small in the neck).

You're right about the scores and how they will impact your "career opportunities" initially with the armed services. You can sure serve with your scores... but you may not be able to pick your "job."

If you type ASVAB into Amazon you'll get a grip of options for self study, some will have sample tests like you already completed and others even include sample questions and brief prep for how to interpret and answer the real deal... tracing the gears to find the final direction, brief explanations on electrical circuits and what they are saying... etc.

Hell there are lots of brothers here who have the expertise to explain a lot of the stuff if you find yourself struggling with specific sorts of questions... myself included.

Pick up a study guide... talk to your recruiter.. he gets paid to help with these sorts of things and can probably get you the materials for free, and lend a big hand... my recruiter drove an hour each way twice a week to go running with me for three months. No kidding.

Best of luck on getting ready for the real deal. Worst comes to worst, you can join up and work towards officer the old fashioned way... no harm in that.

I don't remember what my score was, but I know my practice test wazs lower than the real test. The recruiter said that real test is easier and most will score a lot higher on it.

Thats good! Thanks for all of the advice guys! Also I learned that I can use my ACT score instead of ASVAB. I will still have to retake the ACT since I was too busy not caring when I took it 5 years ago. I got a 21, and I need a 23 for OCS, aint that a biatch.

@ Mr Treinen:

There are a couple of things to consider when interpreting your ASVAB scores:

There are sections that are timed and measure speed of answer and volume of responses, and there are sections with a set limit of questions that need to be completed in a given time.

At least that was the set-up in 97.

If you pull out the "answer as many as possible" sections on which i performed in the 99th percentile, there was only one question that I literally got wrong. This, at least, was how the detail was presented to me at the time. I'll be the first to admit that there could have been something undisclosed or fabricated during those discussions, but I'd like to think our network of recruiters would have more integrity than to present it inaccurately.

Both the ASVAB and AFQT scored at 99th percentile overall. There is no way to generate a 100 on either index... because they are percentiles which indicate performance against other test takers. The format of the test doesn't allow for a perfect score... no one has ever "run out" of questions in the speed sections. That being said... I can understand what you are saying...

Take that detail out of my post, and the rest still stands as the advice I'd offer the original poster. Wasn't a post about me, was a post to help a brother out. My apologies.

That is far more believable. It's just that in the years I've been in the Army, many many people have claimed similar things about the ASVAB (perfect scores, only one or two wrong, etc. Even one person who claimed to get 100). But when asked for the results, which everyone should have a copy of, and they are on your ERB, none have ever produced the proof. Sorry JHard, didn't mean to threadjack!

Its no problem guys! I was really surpised by how difficult it was. I think I will go back and take the ACT again, get my extra two points, then apply to OCS

What do you need on the ASVAB to get OCS? If you're not mechanically inclined and do not understand electricity those portions will get you for sure.

I hated the speed sections big time and just took my good ole time. Then I concentrated on the rest of the test. Afterall I didn't want to end up with a high score and them pushing me towards some analytical career. I wanted to blow shit up!

Just get some electrical knowledge down and mechanical knowledge and you'll do fine.

Took this back in 84. Scored high, recruiter was excited and wanted me to go into intelligence, codes, etc. I never signed up!:scratchhe

I recommend anyone looking at the military take several ASVAB practive tests to prepare them for the real thing. Then, whichever area ou scored lowest in - drill on that one for a week. Repeat as many times as possible for the real thing. It doesn't mean much after that first contract - but it's awfully nice to get a long list of jobs to pick from!

You mean you can pick your jobs? :) Unfortunately since I wasn't the greatest juvenile which required 3 waivers and even scoring in the mid 90s on my ASVAB back in 1990, I didn't get to pick. Luckily I am a pretty bright guy and very mechanical and must have scored extremely well on that part as I was assigned a job as a helicopter mechanic in the USMC. Did it for 10 years before calling it quits and moving on.
