Every 6 months or so my family gets together to play a World War II strategy board game called Axis and Allies.

I posted this to find out if there any BOTL out there that plays the game regularly? If so, which version do you play? See the below list.

For those that don’t know, the board game came out in the early 1980s. Through the years there have been several modifications, with each successive release developing more sophisticated rules, game pieces, and map configurations. In 2009, a Pacific 1940 game was released with its companion Europe 1940 released a year later. Those two board games can be connected to make a massive world map. This is the game version that my family current plays, using alpha 3 rules.

Below are some quick images of the game (the lower part of the board is cut-off). We also smoke a lot of cigars while playing!

I LOVE A&A! We played classic for years and modified the rules a bit. We connected N. America to Hawaii and then to Japan (literally drew it on the board). Also, if all 5 dice came up sixes we'd call that a nuke, and the two territories were obliterated including all pieces on the two; and you couldn't pass through then any longer. Didn't happen often, but when it did it was a game changer & pretty wild stuff.

I just realized, I've described how we played Risk, not A&A. A&A it seemed that the first 6 moves were always the same, so we just started the game with those moves already done (I don't recall what they were exactly).

I recall that A&A took a LOT longer than Risk though.

What's a board game? is it available for ps3? :cbig:
LOL... There is an online version of the game but only for the A&A Revised version of the board game at http://www.gametableonline.com/. I forgot to list the link to that version of the game (amazon link).

There is also client called TripleA where you can play the game online but the maps and rules are not exactly the same as the board games. I prefer the board game version, since you can meet folks in person, talk smack, and smoke cigars... my family and I probably smoked 20 cigars between the 3 of us over 3 days.

I forgot to mention that the above images of the game can easily take 12-20 hours to play. Over 3 days we only got in 2.5 games and play approximately 12 hours a day.

I've got Classic, Revised, Pacific, D-Day, and Battle of the Bulge, and have played a lot of Europe as well. Good times. Rule #1: The fleet moves together.

Ha... yeah, in the above image I whipped out the US fleet in the Pacific with a bunch of planes, subs, and kamikazee strikes (A&A 1940 alpha 3 rules) and is the reason why my Japaneses fleet is somewhat scattered and the US is in Korea. The US and British fleet is somewhat scattered in Atlantic since the round before I took out a bunch of their fleet with German planes, destroyer, and subs... I agree completely with your golden rule!

Have you or Monsterdg ever check out TripleA?

Whatever... later in that game, I had 17 Japanese mechanized infantry and 8 tanks with about 13 fighters, dive bombers, and tactical bombers blasting Moscow... then the Germans finished them off. Unfortunately, I had to back out of France with the Germans and later lost Western Germany to the US. I ended up quitting as the Axis so that my brother could get in a game before we had to fly back home.

The biggest lose for me was my brother pulling out a Ratzilla and smoking it before I even noticed what he pulled out...!

Wow that takes me back, been probably 15 years since I have played. Don't even remember the version or rules anymore. Nowadays I am lucky to get friends and family to even play risk with me, much less something more complicated

I used to play this game all the time with my dad, I loved it. It would be epic battles and we would not sleep for a few days. I would love to get back into it.

Some other great boardgames I like:
Shadows Over Camelot - great cooperative game, except one of you is a traitor!
Battlestar Galactica - similar.
Last Night on Earth - Kill some zombies as horror movie cliches.
Game of Thrones - Diplomacy-like backstabbing.
Settlers of Catan - Resource management.

I clicked a few of those links for giggles. Was quite amused at the Amazon review that stated "Creating 40 year old virgins since 1981" heh

I used to play A&A "Classic" all the time, I've played Europe as well and probably one other. Overall, I prefer the various RISK games, of which I have at least 6.

Never played it but it looks interesting. I do play a lot of Risk and Settlers of Catan with my friends when we are bored. But we play with modified rules that involve drinking as we are in college.
