  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I've been thinking for a while about setting up a blind review contest/series for bargain cigars, the types of sticks that are always mentioned in the "What's your Favorite Cheap Smoke" type of threads. All of the cigars I'd pick retail under $5, with an average cost of maybe $2 to $3. How many of you would be interested in such a thing? If there are 6 cigars total, the cost (including shipping) would be less than $30 a person. Since most of the cigars I have in mind come in boxes or bundles of 20, I'd need 15+ people signed up in order to make this feasible.

If you're interested, please post here. There's no commitment yet. Also, any suggestions would be appreciated (review format, whether this should be a contest or not, etc.). Thanks!

i don't think i'd be good for this. i know if i like a stick and i know if i don't like a stick. kind of like the rating a chick on a scale of 1 to 10. for me it's more of "would i hit it or not" :stretchgr

I would be down.
If you need any help, ideas or tips Benzopyrene (luke) might be able to help. He did a few of these last year and they went over great.

Bump . . . I need a few more participants to go ahead with this. I've tentatively picked 5 cigars, and the total cost is a little over $180. With 15 participants, that's about $17 a person including priority mail shipping. (The extra cigars will be used as prizes or sent to the troops.) If there are 20 people, the cost per person drops to about $14.

I have a few other questions for potential participants:

1) Do you want this to be a contest, like the blind reviews that Benzo ran?

2) Any size preferences? So far, I've mostly picked roughly robusto sized cigars, since that seems to be a neutral, popular size.

3) Should I include something that is likely a dog rocket? So far, all of the cigars are cheap but generally well-regarded. I think it would be interesting to see the blind reviews on something like a Don Brotto or a Puros Passionado, but I'm not going to intentionally subject anyone's palate to something like this unless you guys are willing to take the risk.

You don't need to be "good" at this to participate. I learned a lot participating in the last review contest. I just sat down with the cigar and a notepad and wrote down any flavor I thought I detected. It was fun to test my palate, and I was pleased to see that the other brothers observed some of the flavors that I had noted. Honestly, I don't expect these to be the most complex cigars around . . . a simple "would i [smoke] it or not" would be fine. :smokingbo

This is a great way for anyone who is trying to refine thier pallet, to get 10+ reviews on the same cigar from the same box. And a very affordable sampler as well.
