Ok, so I've seen several mentions, and even threads about beard oil recipes, but no dedicated thread to beard oil. So that being said, I think I get the reason for beard oil (itchiness, dryness, softness) but I've not seen a consolidated list of reputable products. I'm certainly not looking for a DYI recipe, I'm not that motivated.

I'm on my first try at growing a beard. Had a goatee for many years, but have never grown a beard until now. I oficially started on December 19th, and the longer it gets the longer I want it to grow. Kinds like the slippery slope we all know and love...cigars.

So, what's you're preferred beard oil?

And here's the beard straight out the bed with half a cup of coffee in me.

Nice looking beard sir!

Each oil will be slightly different but really you're looking to do two things. Keep some oils on the skin which is a problem for some men and fortunately not myself. Secondly the oil will make the hair shinier, softer, and more controlled. I've tried a few products and personally I don't think there's a huge difference, so get a product that you enjoy the smell of. I personally enjoyed Portland Beard Co Timber. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I don't think it actually does anything to make your beard healthier, but it certainly makes your beard FEEL healthier. It does oil the skin though and it gives the beard some weight making it more manageable.

With the stage of your beard, it will do more for your skin than your beard. I personally didn't find much need for oil until about the 6 month mark. When my beard really started to get some length I tried some Honest Amish Beard Balm that really did wonders to help give it some weight and also feeling soft.

OK, I know you said you didn't want to make your own, but hear me out. You can use straight jojoba or argan oil so there's nothing to really make. Jojobo is the closest to your skin's natural oil and I find argan to do more for the facial hair. I prefer argan but is priced considerably more than jojoba. I can also say the best thing I've ever put in my beard is coconut oil. My current routine is to run some jojoba straight out of the shower when the beard is still wet then coconut oil after the beard has had some time to dry.

Oh and be sure to get a boars bristle brush regardless of what you use. It will help distribute the oils through the hair.

Thanks for the info. I should have mentioned that my skin is super dry underneath it all...it's like I e got dandruff when I scratch it

I use ultimate African oil it has all the oils in it and smells nice enough. Like was said earlier a good boars bristle brush is a necessity to distribute the oil well.

For me, it depends on how long it is. If I'm keeping it fairly short, I like the Grave Before Shave beard oil. If I'm letting it go, which is mainly during deer hunting season, I'll use Honest Amish beard balm. My beard is very thick and gets very curly once it gets longer. I belive the thickness and texture of your beard should have the most impact on which product you use.

I have a few different oils, and I like them sometimes. What I prefer to use is Maestros Classic Beard Butter. I use it more often than oil but it does the same thing

I go back and forth between beard oil and balm. I think I like balm better, as you can kinda style the longer parts. Bear oil feels better, however.

So, just keep experimenting. If you go on Amazon you'll see the "Beardos who bought this product also bought this product" section. Just try one every month.

Right there with ya. One of reasons I started shaving my head bald years ago. Itchy beards with beardruff all over your shirt is not cool.
For the beard and stash I use these products and will say they keep the beardruff at bay, while keeping things smelling good.
The oil is a fragrance free type, the instructions say to put some in Palm rub hands together then rub into beard. When I do this more stays on my hands then on my face. So I use the dropper to go into beard to the skin and squeeze a little on then move over a bit and repeat. When finished I brush and scrub whole beard with boar brush to work it all in.


Next step is Honest Amish, this stuff I love. Like a bunch of tiny balls of wax and oils. Has a mild holding ability and smells very good. This I get about a dime size dab on Palm and rub until all the little balls are melted then rub into beard then brush again.


Last is the mustache wax. With a strong hold it helps keep the sides of my stashe out of my mouth. Also good for shaping handlebars if that's your thing.


This stuff is hard though, so I usually drag the back of my thumbnail across it and then roll it between my fingers to soften it up to apply.

With these three products I no longer have the flakes, and no itching whatsoever. Hope this helps some.
