  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

So ive been thinking about getting into bee keeping. I've contemplated it for quite sometime and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for me. I love how beautiful and majestic bees are and id love to say i jar my own honey and eventually ferment it LOL!

Cheers

I would see if you can find someone in your area that does it and see if they'll give you a tour of their hives. There are a number of books on the subject, but nothing beats hands on experience.

You might have to check with your state department of agriculture. I know in PA you must register bee hives so the state can come and check for disease of your bee population. Your state website is a good start. My cousin and I were thinking about it because he has many acres of goldenrod that would make lots of intensely flavored honey.

Don't need land, you could put them in your backyard. Did know you were interested. I have two hives at my place.

Do a search for a local beekeeping organization in your area. They will provide beginner information and help you get started.

Dan I figured you would get a kick outta this LOL.
Bees rock . I did think of something I forgot to put in my other post...smoke 'em before you open 'em. One of the vets I work with, her husband has just started keeping bees. He convinced her to help him move the hive and instead of smoking the bees he decided he would just move it at night while they "slept". She came into work the next day with several welts on her face/arms.
