I remember reading somewhere, sorry I don't know if it was on this board or another, that one of the pipe companies that put together a good starter kit: a decent pipe and a selection of tobaccos. Can anybody offer input into whether or not they think this is the best way to start out & really find out if pipe smoking is for me? And what the company is?

I don't mind spending a little bit of money, but want to avoid having to invest hundreds before I really figure out if this is for me. If there is some better way to get initiated, please let me know.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

I know this thread is old but I would reccomend giving the Boswell's a call, as Greg already said.

For ~$50 they'll send you a pipe, pipe tool, pipe cleaners, and matches along with a few grams of different tobaccos to try...plus their pipes are easy to smoke from when new.
