  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Just getting into pipes. Have a newbie trade going now. I have seen some cool pipes online like on Amazon and eBay. I hate eBay.. what should I look for when looking at pipes? Size, material etc. Thanks

Hello Dale, Welcome to Pipes.

There are many types of Pipes and if you find that you like the Hobby and past time of smoking a pipe, you may want to have a few different pipes.

Now to start out, I would say a MM Corn Cob is a great place to start for a new smoker. Then I would get a nice Briar pipe. If you find that you really like to smoke a Pipe then invest in a nice full size Meerschaum.

Finding a pipe is not always an easy task. there are loads of places to get a nice pipe. One a local B&M (If you have any, I don't)
If you have a local CVS or Rite Aid you can get most times a MM Cob or Dr. Grabow pipe from them. They both smoke very nice and are good starter pipes. I would maybe even get some Carter Hall or Prince Albert pipe tobacco as a good start and can help break in a new Briar pipe. Don't need to buy a Bucket/can try a small package to find out if you will like them or not.

Size of pipe to start out isn't 100% important. a good starting pipe is all that is needed. I started with a Dr. Grabow Omega. and a cob. I now have 26+ Dr. Grabow pipes. There are loads of nice pipes out there. Some swear by Peterson, Stanwell, Savinelli, Tsague and even Nording. However I am someone that likes to offer piratical advice. Get a lower priced pipe and make sure that it is something that you really want to do. It isn't for everyone.

Hope some of this helps and you find Smoking a Pipe enjoyable
James

If you have a local CVS or Rite Aid you can get most times a MM Cob or Dr. Grabow pipe from them.
Sadly, you have to take CVS off that list.. they stopped carrying anything tobacco related.... everything went on major clearance about a month ago.. and once stocks were gone.. they were gone...

but.. I absolutely agree that a MM Cob is a great, and inexpensive place to start if you can find one.... Ive got a handful of what I would consider very nice pipes... but.. I still reach for one of my cobs probably 25% of the time.. and if I travel with a pipe or take one on the road with me... its almost always a cob (dont worry about it getting lost, stolen, broken, etc..)..

I hate ebay too... but.. Ive gotten some awesome pipe deals there.. I've picked up a couple of very nice estate pipes for less than $10 shipped.. my most recent fleabay find was an Amphora Rhodos.. they normally sell for $99 on pipesandcigars.. it was in damn near new condition.. I bet it had only been smoked a dozen times or less.. took almost no clean up at all... it was $7.00 (before shipping)..

What about the material its made of? I have seen a few really cool pipes but they are made of pear. I did some reading but it seems just to be a personal thing if its good or not.

Some like them I don't, I had one but got rid of it. You get what you want, it has been stated cob or briar to start. Won't say no more. Enjoy the hobby. Good luck

As a newcomer, I should have taken some advise that I didn't:

- I didn't buy any estate pipes that already had been broken in. Bad idea.
- I only bought one cob pipe, and tossed it 'cause I felt like a hillbilly. Bad idea.
- I bought a ton of aromatics because most latakia and perique blends smelled like ketchup. Bad idea.

Now I look for good estate pipes, always have a few cobs laying around, and I send all my aromatic crap to cigarblunk. That's my pipe smoking history in 100 words or less. Any of the online dealers you see mentioned in the pipe retailer sticky can get you squared away for a good start.

Buy in person at your local B&M if you have one. Test to see if it passes a cleaners, stem fits properly and isn't too tight nor too loose, and check weight by holding it by the the end of the stem in your hand. If no B&M smoking pipes.com sells you the exact pipe pictured and are a solid company. I second everyone on cobs, but don't buy a new inexpensive briar. An estate of a quality briar is a much better buy- period

One of the best pieces of advice I read (and I wish I could remember where it is from) is that a $2000 pipe doesn't necessarily smoke any better than a $30 pipe. Check out Dr. Grabow for an inexpensive pipe and then, after your n00b trade, you'll have a cob and a briar. Those two should help you decide whether or not you go down this slope. If you do, there will be plenty of opportunities to get more pipes (trust me!)

And, if you decide piping just isn't for you, you'll not have invested a lot of money.
