I prefer war series over a movie

More time to actually add more meaningful content

With that being said

Saving private ryan

if you want something shorter, Restrepo the documentary hits the feels.
Saving Private Ryan is one of my favorite movies.

Restrepo was an absolute game changer for me. You're spot on. Right in the feels.

Just curious

What war movie do you watch no matter how often it comes on TV?

Growing up "Away all Boats" was a popular movie. It was panned by the critics and it has kind of faded into neverland but I though Jeff Chandler was spectacular.

"From Here to Eternity" is another.
Platoon and the thin red line

My father, an infantry soldier in the Battle of the Bulge and several other European theater battles, thought that Saving Private Ryan was the most realistic depiction of war he had seen in any non-documentary film. It really shook him up to watch it. I thought it was an excellent war film.

When I was 13, he took me to the movie theater to see Battle of the Bulge (1965). Towards the end he was so angry he stood up in the theater and yelled about how that's not the way the battle was fought. I just rewatched the film yesterday for the first time since then, and I have to say it is probably one of the worst depictions of war - a true Hollywood treatment with all the ridiculous cliches.

Some real good ones listed already, some of my favorites are:
13 hours to Benghazi
Tears of the son
Wind talkers
We where solders
Midway ( the new one ) WOW
American sniper
lone survivor
try this... there was a series called "Over there" it ran for one season only, it was in Iraq I think?? we enjoyed it
Acts of valor ( this has some so-so acting but the action is outstanding !!!)
a lot of these would not be considered war movies but would be combat films.
if you like combat films and don't mind aliens Battle LA is great also.

As a child of the Vietnam era, the ones I've seen again and again:

Platoon
Apocalypse Now
The Deerhunter
Full Metal Jacket

As a couple others mentioned, these are my favorites, not necessarily the best.

These 4 come to mind as being the best growing up during that era.
