Fun, Interesting exercise next time your out at a range.
1. Holster your weapon or canceled carry ready.
2. Have a friend stand next to you facing away with a knife.
3. On cammand have the friend run away from you ,,, at the same time you draw and engage a target 5 feet away in a safe direction.
4. At the sound of the shot have the friend stop.
Q: How much ground can a person cover in the time it takes to draw and engage.

Anybody who thinks people stay still during a violent encounter shouldn't be armed in the first place. None of this should be news.

Nothing is ever how you think it will be, it's all about how you train your muscle memory

I believe the distance has been expanded to 35 feet in law enforcement circles as to the distance away from a subject armed with a knife or blunt instrument is within a reasonable distance to close in before a weapon can be succesfully drawn and aimed. Of course some can make the shot in quicker time, but that is the standard by which the reasonableness of using a firearm with deadly force is judged.

Ignorance is bliss
What?
If you're already carrying, and discovering that a person can cover ground in a dead sprint is NEW to you, you're a liability instead of an asset.

What are useful things to discover?
How quickly you can draw from concealment, how much ground you can laterally cover during that draw, how much space you need to gain between you and your attacker before shooting from retention or extension, what it takes to retain a weapon when somebody is on top of you, how to make effective hits from compromised positions, etc etc etc.

But, please, keep making juvenile comments towards people who have put in the work.

Sad truth is lots of people that carry dont know such things and lots of people dont train enough (if thier is such a thing as enough). To top it all off... people panic, people freeze and people die because of it!

Good drill, but the knife isn't really necessary. Running with scissors isn't a good idea. Sprinting with a knife is worse, especially on uneven ground of an outdoor range. Use a dummy knife if you must. . . Practice safely.

The exercise is designed to educate,, it's not for you guys that know it all. Move lateral whole you draw your weapon and what ? Leave your wife and kids standing there wondering what's happening ? Live in the real world.

Which leads into another point that people dont focus a lot of time on... what is the family to do when stuff goes down?
I know many people that carry that have never instructed/trained their loved ones what to do if things go sideways.
