  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Blends that make the brand famous....?

As I get more and more into pipes in very short order, I find myself wanting to work my way through a lot of different blends. I haven't found something I don't like, yet. Pipe tobacco, cigars and beer are all like boobs to me. I like them all, I just like some more than others.

So what are the current blender defining classics? What's each house known best for? Are some of blends intended for aging or do they release them for immediate gratification?

I figured as a new guy and a growing pipe base here at BOTL a discussion like this could help everyone, including me, out.

as far as i am concerned, just like cigars, manufacturers all intend for pipe tobacco to be consumed. the end user makes the decision of what they want to cellar, and for how long. fuente wants you to smoke their anejos, and esoterica wants you to smoke the stonehaven. if it takes a decade, that's your call.

so far as i can tell, through research only, Va's will age the best. Lat blends will mellow, Bur will fade, and Aros will thin. time wil tell if i am right.

any of y'all have neough cellar depth to give more detail?

Java is spot on in his comments. The two questions above though... Are you asking, for example, what Samuel Gawith or say McClelland blends are the best etc etc?

Yeah basically. Like how T52s are the shit from DE, what're the pipe tobacco blenders known for? I already know that Stonehaven and Penzance basically define Esoterica. So yeah what about the other guys, MacBaren, McCellend, and so on. Im just trying to get a better idea of what's out there, other than the near impossible to buy.

Not yet but I will put it on my next order. I did pick up some Dark Star, Samovar, Old Dark Fired, and Full Virginia Flake to try. I also got some Gwaith black and brown twist to give a whirl.

I'd say McClellend's is pretty well know for their annual Christmas Cheer blend as well as the Frog Morton series, that and the ketchup smell from a freshly opened tin. Samuel Gawith is pretty famous for their Full Virgina Flake and Squadron Leader... both are horrible, if found please leave them on the shelf and notify me immediately.

For Samuel Gawith:
St. James Flake
FVF
Squadron Leader
McClelland:
5100
Blackwoods
St. James Woods
That's a tip of the iceberg obviously but it will get us started

I really enjoy Habana Daydream by C&D. it's not their claim to fame by any means but it's made with cigar leaf and that's good enough for me

Well just my opinion but pipe baccy is a little different. Like alot of the companys make bulk tobaccos and sell it to retailers who then put their name on it. Sometimes you can figure out which bulk it is and sometimes you cant, at least I cant.

But if I was to give my thoughts on it i would say

Lane for Lane 1Q (the highest selling tobacco in the country)

MacBaren for their Viginias (at least my opinion)

MacClelland well as an Old Timer in a cigar shop said "you know pipe baccy is good when it smells like ketchup" and most (not including the Frog Mortons) do to me. Ketchup or BBQ sauce.

Dunhill hmmmmmmmm Alfred Dunhill use to blend tobacco for each individual person. "My Mixture" blends. Hence Dunhill My Mixture 965.

For me Peterson would be about the Flakes and Plugs.

Sam Gawith would be St James Flake cuz its hard to find at times.

Buttera - Pelican

GL Pease - Im not sure but the current big one is Gaslight and Jack Knife Plug is popular

Thats some of the top of my head. Just my opinion on their more popular blends I guess.

Are you looking for recommendations on blends? I just finished packing your box. There is a mix in there all of which I like. English, Virginias, an Oriental Blend I love, I even thru in a couple of Aros that I think are pretty good and Im not a big Aro person.

If your liking the Latakia look for English blends.

C&D English Blends are

I just found a sample of that in my cellar
I haven't aged mine, let me know how it is. straight out of the tin it was very very spicy, I wonder if it would tone down over time

You want the blends that people find as the premier, or signature blend for each manufacturer? OK, here is what I think of for these.

Dunhill: Flake, nightcap, Royal Yacht (by the way, I may not like the ones I list.)
C&D: Bow-legged Bear, Plantation Evening, Old Joe Krantz, Pirate Kake
Esoterica: Stonehaven, Penzance, Dorchester
Two Friends: Celtic Mist
GL Pease: Haddo's Delight, Stratford
Samuel Gawith: Full Virginia Flake, 1792, Squadron Leader
McClelland: 5100, Christmas Cheer, Frog Morton, Dark Star
MacBaren: Navy Flake

I suppose there could be some other blenders you could list, but those are the ones I chose.

Peace of The Lord be with you.

Todd
