Currently I own a 35 f2.0, 50 f1.8, 85f1.8, and 200 f2.8. But I'm moving to zooms for convenience.

I shoot zooms as well, but when funds are tight, I'd suggest a basic prime to start out with and expand later if you really get into the hobby. If money were no option, I'd suggest a used 24-70 f/2.8 VR and a 70-200 f/2.8 VR. I shoot both with a D600 and the results are wonderful, but I keep a 50 f/1.8G around for low light shooting when I need a wide aperture.

Since I'm already struggling how I will buy a new kit lens, I figure that's more than sufficient for me! When I had it, I was very pleased with the pictures I was able to get from the kit lens.
I have a 50mm, 18-55kit, 70-300 zoom, fisheye adapter lens, 18-200 which never really leaves my camera for my side work. I need that zoom.

And NOTHING wrong with refurbs or used, as long as you get them from someone reputable or if you personally know someone who owned it and is selling.

You can get some great refurbished lenses from places like B&H, Borrowlenses (I've bought from then before and am extremely happy), Adorama, etc. No lens is covered for physical damage unless you buy an extended warranty. BTW, my 70-200 F/2.8 is a factory refurbished lens is the one I shoot most with. But here's the thing with photography, you are better off with really great glass on a decent body than decent glass on a really great camera body.
