BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE
Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I can't understand such a policy.. if you give the people what they want they're more productive restricting net access to an hour a day won't make any one more productive. I understand that it can be a distraction but really people find other ways to busy themselves at work some play video games, others chat my employees have free run to use as much of the net as they want. As long as they don't download porn or annoying malware I'm fine with it. I'm happy to see an employee waste his day at the PC at east the fool made it to work on time even if was to check out the scores in the morning and who knows he may get some work done during his break from all that surfing.

I got an eye opener when they printed out my co-workers internet wanderings...it was like 750 pages long. Needless to say, I quit going on so much and limited my time to my lunch break.

iPhone. we don't even have computers at work, but in between clients, I just sit there browsing on my iPhone. if you can log in the Wifi, it's even better, if not, like in my case, no problem, it's fast enough for reading and posting a bit. maybe not your 18.4 average, but good enough

I hear you but...an hourly person is getting paid to work. Studies have shown, and yes I have seen them, that people can waste up to 25% of their time on the internet. If the work is getting done in 75% of the time i would hope an employee would seek to fill the rest of the time finding creative ways to make more money. My businesses always worked on the basis of profit sharing. The more we made the more the team made. If one member of the team is goofing off for 25% of the time, even though"getting their work done" it was not fair to the others.

Ha thier plan back fired, I just have to careful. We use a web based lead tracking system and need to be logged in all day. So the program that limits us to one hour won't work. But it's probably for the best that I do more work.
As an employer, I know that even the most highly effective employees will only actually work for maybe 6 hours per day, regardless of distractions from the internet, cell phones, other employees, etc. My position is that internet use is to be limited, especially when we have a significant current workload. While we have a very casual environment with flexibility, we also have a lot of work to do ( in a client service indistry).
All of them know that I have access to all the sites they visit and emails that they send/ receive. While this may sound harsh, I'm the one who takes all the risk of the business and who provided all of the equity to start and maintain the firm. Fortunately, I spend very little time in employee oversight of this nature; good thing, because I don't have time.
Additionally, we share profits through a year end plan as well as a 401k retirement plan. Do I expect a focused effort day in and day out? Yes, and the rewards can be siginificant. That's why it's called work, not play; the paycheck states "paid in full" and I expect a return on my investment.
