Buying a 4WD Car - Need Advice

I had a subaru wagon for 5 years. Except for some carborator problems (this was a 1997 wagon, non fuel injected that we bought new) it was very dependable. We did a lot of snow skiing then and many times we passed big 4x4's that were stuck. It was a 4x4 not an awd so when it was normal driving we got better mileage.

If gas mileage is a big issue dont get the xterra or jeep, with the subaru you should see 27+ mpg's on the highway whereas the other 2 would be lucky to get 20mpg. If its not a huge issue id get the jeep just because I like jeeps. Wranglers are fun in the summer and winter, subarus are really just fun in the winter.

I'd say Subaru. I had an X-terra, and liked it. Never had any probs with mine. Only complaints I had were the gas mileage, and I thought it was under-powered.

I'd also check out the 2003-2009 4runners. I love my 2008, can't imagine having anything else. On the v6 model you can switch between 2wd and 4wd (on the fly) to save about 1mpg.

What year is the Forrester? Is it an XT? We love our Outback, and it works well here in Denver. I only wish we had gotten the turbo sometimes but the AWD system works well. I slap snow tires on for the winter and the car tracks really well when it snows. The only downside is the maintenance schedule can be somewhat demanding. If I follow the severe maintenance schedule I would be replacing the ATF, gear, and brake fluid almost every 12-18 months!
