  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Then their site pointed me to this blog/rant along with the attached PDF which lists the Roll Call on the SCHIP Bill.

Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Christian Eiroa. My father and I make Camacho Cigars. I am the third generation in this industry and hopefully my three sons will be the 4th. I am not posting about politics to stir up problems nor will I follow up with something about religion - this I promise. I just thought that it is important that I passed on what I have learnt so we can protect what we love so much.

Unfotrunately, we have fallen prey to the politics involved with the anti - tobacco movement. Although we have been involved in supporting any and all lobbying organizations (I am currently on the board of the Cigar Association of America), in 2007, the SCHIP expansion forced us to get even more political and started lobbying ourselves.

We and I am sure you as well, are sick and tired of taxes going up on cigars and having less and less places to smoke in all the time. This 2008 will become a crucial year for all of us. Not only are we facing the devastating effects of the SCHIP but it is occurring during an election year.

(The SCHIP expansion is a proposal from Sen. Max Bauccus[sp?] D - Mt. He is proposing that the funding for this expansion be an additional $ 800 M / year to be derived from cigars. Basically the Fed tax on cigars would jump from $ .04875 to and average of $ 1.10 / cigar - not to exceed $ 3.00. To you, this tax would really mean about $ 3 - 4 more per cigar because the formula, as it moves through the channels, becomes extremely complicated)

Attached you will find a PDF file on those who voted FOR (the bad guys) and AGAINST (our friends) the SCHIP Expansion. Although there was more than one vote in the House, the results are similar.

As for the candidates: Hillary has vowed to pass the SCHIP. Obama has not said anything but does oppose "Universal Healthcare". McCain is dead set against it and even finds it laughable that we are asking more people to smoke to fund it. Giulianni is against it as well. We do not know Romney's position just yet but we can only assume he is against it as well.

Please take your time to read the Roll Call. If this is an issue that is of importance to you, then now you know who to vote for or against. Like the NRA, we should become more active in protecting our passions. If you don't think it can happen, in Scotland, the very last cigar store just closed down.

Let's protect each other and VOTE, please VOTE.

Thank you for your time and I am stepping off the Soap Box.
