I must be missing out on the new CAO La Traviata... I've had 3 out of the box I bought and they just aren't great on my palette. They aren't bad at all, but it's just not a 93 point cigar to me. First new box of cigars I've got in months and now I'm bummed, prob going to have to sell the rest of them now and get something else. Had high-hopes for this cigar!

That's a shame, I've really enjoyed the couple that I've had so far. I think the 93 rating may take value in to consideration (as much as they'll say it doesn't). It's a good smoke for under 5 bucks but I can understand how some people might not like the flavour, it's quite unique.

Ive had 2 and the first I really enjoyed. The second was not as good but i have 2 more. Maybe the second was just an off day on my part?

I've tried a couple now and have really enjoyed them. Definately a leathery, earthly taste to them. Nice change of pace to CCs.

I wouldn't call the Traviata a 93- but they are very good. Sorry you are not enjoying them :(

Take a look at who rated it 93, and then see how many Ads in that same publication are for CAO products. Ratings and advertising dollars go hand in hand. I value BOTL rating way more than I value a magazine rating. Case in point...Casa Magna for cigar of the year, over a Padron, and several other cigars that are far superior.

If I recall though, CA "says" their monthly ratings don't factor in price at all - and I'm pretty sure they say they reband them with just a number when the panel submit their scores for them. I think their website had a video on the process.

In the annual ratings though, I am positive they said that cost was a factor in giving the cigar of the year to the Casa Magna (I've never had one so I can't comment on that particular one).

As you say, I'm sure ad dollars factor in somewhere - and I agree, I'd take a BOTL review over a CA one...but at the end of the day, there's no substitute for trying a stick yourself - as this thread shows. Some people greatly enjoyed the LaTrav, others not nearly as much. Who knows why....

They have two new sizes....

Animados: 5 5/6 x 46 (corona gorda)

Favorito: 5 1/2 x 52 (petit belicoso)

....I really enjoyed the Corona Gorda!

Though an interesting point ... be careful. Tatuaje and DPG spend a TON of advertising dollars in CA and they too receive very high ratings ...

really, where, a Tat was only # 9 in 2006, #15 in 2007, Guapo #13 in 2008 , and a Ambos Mundos #18 in 2009. Other than that everything else receives an 88 or so. I would not consider that high ratings.

just goes to show you, don't depend on anyone's ratings but yours, smoke what you like and carry on.....

consider it the swan song of CAO. Looking at what they put out as of recent; MX2, LX2, CX2... all shit. And now that they're been bought/merged/ect by Genearl/CI, I'm gonna guess La Traviata is going to be the last decent smoke from this company.

The CAO Black is one of my very favorite sticks. I had an MX2, wasn't crazy about it, and had two La Traviatas. The first one I liked, and the second one I actually tossed, which is something I rarely do. Weird. Just picked up a fiver of Gold Maddies on a recommendation....we'll see.
