So my buddy did a recent DIY project that turned out pretty good. He made a cheap very efficient air filter for his smoking porch. I decided to pass on the knowledge bomb and see what you guys think.

Needed Items-
20 inch Box Fan
20*20 1200 micron furnace filter
Zipties

Bam!

It does actually work really good and the suction pulls the filter to the fan.

Cost - $35

He just keeps it in the room. He does it a little different by setting it on its side on a milk crate and just laying the filter on top. I am gonna test it out tomorrow. My room is much bigger but in his room it worked much better than the $100 air purifier he bought earlier.

Thanks for clarifying. I'm going to keep my eye out on CL for a cheap fan now.

Wait...so let me get this straight. The furnace filter actually removes the smoke from the room? Does he point it out a door as a form of exhaust and is there a positive flow source? If so I need to do this with my exhaust fan. I think I asked those questions right...LOL

Yeah, as long as it's at least 1200 micron it filters smoke. It actually flows very well for having a filter attached. I figured worst case scenario, I have a new fan and am out $15 for a filter.

If this works even remotely well you may end up saving me from a 600$ rabbit air purchase! pictures brother! pictures!

I will give it a shot tomorrow afternoon. See if I can fill my bedroom with smoke.

I could see this filtering to some extent...but what about the smell?
I would think the fan suction power is significantly reduced by basically blocking the side with the filter.

Love to see a video of it in action.

It's so simple, but brilliant. Makes me think of the time POTOB and I lived together, and we smoked inside the living room with the patio door along with all of the windows open, and the ceiling fan spinning in an attempt to try and push out the smoke. This contraption would have probably worked better.

Dan they're furnace filters that go into the housing of home heating, ventilation and AC units inside the body of the incoming "fresh" air inlet.
