Cigar anatomy/geometry question?

Hey Brothers,
I've noticed this for quite a while but never been able to figure out "why" this happens. It works with absolutely every cigar I smoke:

If a cigar is drawing poorly or about to go out, I rotate it as I draw and the issues as immediately corrected. Better draw and huge plumes of smoke. If I pick up a cigar resting on the ashtray and draw the exact same way (same orientation) over and over it will go out or at the very least not improve.

Thoughts/heresay/conjecture?

i never rest my smokes where the smoldering area can touch a surface. it's almost a superstition, but i don't want the tray to act as a heat sink and throw off the burn.

as for the rotating theory, it could be a compensation for the way your physiology naturally work. we all have differing shapes of mouths, tongues, different mouth volume, and different ways of drawing, and the rotation could be keeping you from wearing a rut in it, so to speak. or, the rotation could allow the oils which vaporize in combustion to disperse more evenly.

FWIW i have a strong (but not entirely compulsive) need for symmetry, and usually rotate my smokes every few draws. i also eat corn on the cob in typewriter-like lines, and waffles by the square, so maybe a little compulsive? o)

I have experienced the same thing. I'm not an expert, but I think when you rotate the cigar it draws air through it in a more even manner. This leads to a more even burn and, since you're not getting an uneven burn, a little more smoke output. I have noticed that not all cigars benefit from rotating them as you smoke so :dunno:.

I do too. I started doing it when I was a kid and always have since. So at least your not alone in your insanity.

Also to the OP I read somewhere when first looking up how to smoke a cigar, that the cherry of the cigar burns upward. So if you continually smoke in one direction that the botom will begin to go out and the top can over heat. I have always rotated my cigars just because of reading this.

LOL apparently I'm stilla noob after4 years of cigar smoking. Humbled. I did have a great stick tonight that turned into a dud half-way and was able to limp it along with the turn n burn.
