  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

ditto--that database is a really great tool. It's saved me a couple times from overbidding.

C-bid is always price driven, people will continue to bid until it is to out of their price range. I just bid on an item, if it is out bid I get an email, then either I rebid or let it go. Most lots on cbid come back around every week or so. Just keep your eyes open. It is also good to know the average price of most cigars to know when bidding has become to high, if you are within I'd say 5 to 10 dollars on a five pack of being able to buy it in a shop you to high and let it go.

CBID 101:

1) The main thing to remember about cbid is to be PATIENT!! As Donk said, lots will keep coming up. Choose your "this would be such a killer deal" price, bid that and don't go higher. It may take weeks, but you'll probably get it. That was the mistake I made...I settled for too many "great" deals instead of being patient enough to wait for the "freakin' insane" deals.

2) Price-shop with Cigars International, Famous Smoke (site and auctions!), etc. You will save a ton of money at cbid, but you can go completely broke saving money :) You'd also be suprised at some things--i.e.: Rocky Patel Vintage 2nds are great cigars, but since everyone knows that, they sell for $2-3 per stick. Rocky Patel Vintage 1sts sell for about $3/stick if you're patient. Since realizing this, I'm not going to personally buy the 2nds anymore, since I can get the 1sts so cheap!

3) Bid on the "Quickies," which are 1-day-only auctions. Sometimes you'll get something cheaper on a Quickie than a 5-Pack of the exact same item closing at the exact same time (or vise-versa!). They go live at 10am EST daily I believe (though you can view them an hour or two earlier), and the sooner you bid, you the more likely you are to score an awesome deal.

4) You won't save as much as you think on their shipping gimmick. You are charged the full shipping price for the first item and then additional (but less) for each additional item. But the shipping can really add up. Famous Smoke auctions, on the other hand, is a one-time $5.99 and everything after that is free for that week. NOTE: for both auction sites you will want to change your shipping method to weekly to save money on shipping.

5) DON'T OVERBUY. This is the "slipery slope" that you'll hear many people referring to. If you do cbid for 4 or 5 weeks in a row you may just wind up with a year's worth of smokes or more on your hands. The deals will not end, nor will the list if cigars that you want to try. You need to decide NOW, before you start, what you budget is and how many cigars you'd like to acquire before you stop for a while.

6) Forget boxes unless you are positive it's one of our favorite sticks that you'll smoke often, and even so be patient for a killer deal. Stick with singles, 5-packs, and samplers. Your tastes will change over time, and if you're not very strict with your accumulation of cigars, you'll end up with hundreds that you're trying to trade.

7) Singles and samplers ARE a good deal. You may be thinking "but this single is going for $5-$7, but I can get a 5-pack for just $21 so shouldn't I do that? Not necessarily. What if you don't like the cigar? If you only bought a single, you didn't waste anything. If you bought a 5-pack, you have $16 worth of cigars that you didn't like but now have to store.

decent price? try about 1/2 price, at least at my B&M. Very nice score. I've never had one, but have heard they're awesome.

$6 per box, $4 per 5 pack, or $4 per single. Additional items are $1 per box, .50 per 5 pack, and .25 per single.

You can also select daily or weekly shipping (weekly shipping ships on Thursday).

Let's assume you select weekly shipping, and on Thursday you win a box. Then on Sunday you win 3 5packs and another box. And on Wednesday you win 4 singles.

your shipping is for the 8 items is 6 + 1.50 +1 + 1.00 for a total of $9.50. Not bad for 2 boxes, 3 5packs, and 4 singles.

The combined shipping is why I select weekly shipping, and once my first box is won, I'll go ahead and bid a little highter on subsequenst boxes because the reduced shipping is factored in to the overall savings.

Right, that's the key...unless you're having a "bidding week" where you're planing to place a lot of bids, you're probably just there for one or two things. As such, just factor in the shipping cost to your first bid. After that, things are a bit more of a "deal" with the savings on additional shipping.
