Got this from a Friend on ( alt.smokers.cigar) and thought it worthy to pass along.. Well worth a read!..
.............................................

I haven't seen a post that covers this in much detail, so I am offering
my views. I am confident this will not skew future bidding because it
seems no two people around here agree about anything. ;-)
--------
L=Number of Lots up for bid at one time
R=Retail price at Cigars International (CI) or anywhere else
B=Winning Bid
Optimization=Minimizing B/R ratio that wins.
--------
Avoid--Cao, Fuente, Padron--other big names. These have B/R ratios that
often exceed 1.0.
Avoid--Robusto, Rothschild vitolas. Highest B/R ratio of all sizes.
Avoid--Lots with Maduro in the title. Higher B/R than others.
Avoid--CI's top ten sellers from their web page. High B/R for obvious
reasons.
--------
Best Strategies:

(1) L greater than 2 is best scenario.
Bid early and on one lot using autobid. Set max at your acceptable B/R.
This works well because it reduces the probability that one or two high
bidders will make you lose and their high bids will not raise your
autobid unless all lots have identical (or higher) bids by others.
Being early with autobid means you are first in line at any price and
will win at the lowest possible price.
(2) L of 1 or 2 is where you should not use autobid. Pick your B/R and
bid it and don't look again until the auction is over. Anything can
happen on these but if you use autobid there is too high a likelihood
that your highest autobid is needed. Don't look at it again because you
do not want to get into a bidding war.
(3) Bidding on Multiple Lots. Don't autobid. If you do one equal bid
will force
up your multiple so it increases likelihood you go to maximum autobid.
Pick one price early and don't look back.
(4) Bidding late. Identify low B/R with L greater than 2. Do not bid
on all lots because that permits original bidder or bidders to begin
bidding war. Autobid for one lot is optimal here.
-----
Shipping Tips
--Boxes have lowest shipping cost per cigar. Bid on them if you know
you like them.
--Use weekly billing to minimize shipping cost per cigar.
--Bunch purchases so you bid one week, then stay away from the site on
other weeks (good luck on that one ;-) ).
------
Learning Tip
--Bid 1.00 or very low (less than .3) B/R on one lot. You will have to
bid early to do this. You will almost always lose but will have record
of winning bids in your "Bids Lost" list.
------
nada yadda yadda and human nature is inherently unpredictable so these
strategies, while optimal over the long run, cannot assure optimal
results on any given bid....
-----
I think cigarbid when used properly is great for trying new sticks and
I think there are some excellent values there. I currently have a
favorite never reviewed here that is dirt cheap and seems to be below
the radar of other bidders. It will cost you a bunch of Cubans to find
out what it is. ;-)

If you know what you are looking for and you know what those things should cost then it can be a good thing...

I paid over MSRP once but it was only by 2 bucks and they didnt have it at my local store so....

But just be careful

I bought a few things over there. Lots of ignorant bidders though. I generally bid a max of 60% of retail. If I win ... fine. If not ... no great loss.

I only go after the AVO Domaine #20's and #50's and the occasioanl Royal Jamaica Parklane. I've been lucky so far and never paid more than $4.50 ea. for the domaines and the RJ's no mre than $3.00 ea. I don't win them all, but win enough to have them in my humidor all the time.

People certainly get caught up and forget to check the CI site to see what it sells for, dummies.

I Buy form CI or Cbid quite a bit as it's the Only pace I can Find C.A.O.Blacks..
I don't Drive any more here, so It's hard to get out, But if you watch, you can get some deals. And YES there are people that are actually paying WAY TOO much for some.. But this was all "Mathamaticaly Figured" so it's got to be right, RIGHT?... If you know the cost, your good!.. I find some deals in the 5 Pack Deals to replentish my stock here.. The Seconds of Rocky Patel Vintage 1990/92's are a Good smoke and I haven't seen them Anywere either, Got about 100 or so Now!..

Sorry to resurrect a 5 year old thread, but I've become very interested in auction strategies lately. Wondering if anyone else has some strategies they've found effective?

Know when to walk away, otherwise you will get sucked in. Ive stopped using CBID altogether because lately it seems the bids are being padded or there is an influx of uneducated bidders. Either way CBID is not what it once was in my opinion.

There are still good deals to be found and had on the auction sites, IMO. To echo some past posters remarks, if you find something that interests you, determine the maximum amount you're willing to spend on it and set your auto-bid to that amount. If you win the lot - great. If not, move on to the next thing on your list. Of the two major auction sites, I prefer CA to C-Bid for several reasons. One - they seem to have more "customizable" features: order consolidation and shipping options come readily to mind. I like CA's selection over C-Bids. They offer sticks that I'm interested in with more frequency. Finally, every box I've won on CA has arrived sealed and unopened. I cannot say that about boxes I've won on C-Bid. I'm sure that Famous uses CA as a dumping ground at times, but my perception is that they handle their inventory better than C-Bid/CI does.

I also follow the school of thought that has a bidder bidding on a lot of things in one week and then walking away from the site for a while... Getting everything shipped in one box reduces the shipping cost per stick. So I don't start bidding until i see multiple lots of interest, and then refrain from bidding on all them at once. After I win the lot with the earliest closing, I proceed to bid on the other lots of interest. I also constantly check shopping.google.com to make sure I am not paying more per-stick than I would be if i purchased elsewhere...
