  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

OK I have a question to the Cigar/Pipe Smokers out there.

Most on this board do not like Flavored Cigars(for the most part). But a lot of Pipe Tobacco has flavor to it, so why would you not like flavored cigars too. I am just wondering, I have never smoked a pipe so I can not comment. I was just curious.

Thanks,

Simple: I never smoke flavored tobacco, whether you are talking about cigars or pipes. Well, that's a slight exaggeration: I'll smoke maybe a couple of Drew Estates Javas over the course of a year, just as a change of pace. But that's all. IMO, flavored cigars generally suck big time, and flavored pipe tobaccos never taste anywhere nearly as good as they smell, and they burn hot. JMO, YMMV.

I will smoke a nice black cavendish blend with just a hint of flavor on it on occasion, there are different levels of flavoring when it comes to pipe tobacco, you can get some drug store cherry or captain blacks or something and I will not touch it, but if you find a really good blended tobacco like wilke #191 or butternut burley, then a very lightly cased and properly blended smoke can be very enjoyable, IMHO. You can just barley pick up subtle flavors while still tasting mostly tobacco.

I am sure there are cigars out there like that also, but when I pick up a cigar I am looking for a different flavor profile then I do in a pipe tobacco. I prefer a lighter pipe tobacco, but a full bodied cigar.

Like most when I started smoking a pipe I gravitated towards the aromatic blends. But as my tasted changed I moved into English and Virgina blends with out the casing. That said sometimes I like a aromatic blend such as Boswells Berry Cobbler, it flavors are subdued and don't overpower the toboacco flavors. As for flavored cigars, I never smoked one and doubt I ever will I want my cigar to taste like a cigar.

As for cigars, I have yet to smoke a flavored one, and I doubt that day will come ever. I can't start envisioning lighting a stick that will not taste of cigar. Then, pipe tobacco, I'm just starting it and I haven't had the flavoured I bought; but the other two blends smoke gorgeous without a flavoring.

OK so Blueberry Cobler Pipe tobacco is not as "Blueberry" as a Blurberry cigar. I think I get it.

Thanks.
yep pretty much right on. I mixed some cherry baccy with some vanilla stuff and it smells more cherry/vanilla than it tastes.

Fact is, is flavored cigars are good, we just don't want to spend so much money on them and be seen smoking them. Pipes are flavored, and shisha is flavored. I have been smoking shisha for years, but that's a social thing. You get a few people sitting around talking, and you just have a hookah there. Pipes are weird for me, because it's a cross between cigars and shisha (IMO). Tobacco is mostly flavored/aromatic, but it's not a social thing, like shisha. I'm still getting in to pipes, but I'm not as big a fan of them yet.

In reality, though, we eat and drink half the shit we do because it tastes sweet. Why not cigars? What's so bad about that?
I'm not sure, but somewhere down the road some old dudes in fancy clothes and with uppity cracker accents decided that those who smoke flavored cigars are a "lesser" breed.
I say smoke what you like, and like what you smoke. And if anybody ever gives you shit, blow your Acid or pipe or hookah smoke into their face.

I worked with a guy who mostly smoked acids, so I used to pick up different ones with him and try them out. I've enjoyed infused cigars, but what I really detest is any dipped or sweetened tip they put on it. Putting the cigar to your mouth you get this harsh sweetness, and its not a good reaction (first one at that). I learned to just saliva it up and rub it off for the most part. The infusion I think can add an enjoyability to the smoke if done right. However, the smoke is not traditional, so 10 times out of 10, I won't want to reach for one. Its on the 11th day where they are nice. It's much like drinking beverages, I love dark beers, but on the 11th day I'll drink a wheat beer. People who smoke more than 1 cigar a day claim flavored cigars can ruin their palette for their later smokes. And then there is the issue of separate storage as to not infect non-infused sticks.

I think pipe tobacco is completely different. There may well be much more natural pipe tobacco than flavored, I have no idea. Until I got a bit more educated, pipe tobacco was sweet smelling stuff kept in jars at the local tobacco shop. I think a good pipe aromatic is pretty rare on quality standards. Non-aromatics tend to provide better flavor and better smoking experiences because the smoke isn't competing with the topping. In other words, a bad aromatic is much more offensive than a bad non-aromatic, imo.

Smoking is all about flavor for me ... whether pipes or cigars. Complex tastes and aromas of tobacco mixed with coffee, dark chocolate, sweet cedar, roasted nuts, etc. have always appealed to me. I've tried many different flavored pipe tobacco blends and cigars over the years, but only found a few that I truly enjoyed.

I've found that for the most part, the tobaccos that get flavorings added are cheap and of low quality. They don't burn as well, have a harsher smoking profile and probably have little to no enjoyable flavor on their own. But in order to sell these floor sweepings, the companies doctor them up in an attempt to find some niche customers.

Well is this not why we're all here? Hear hear, Ted.

I'd like to add, flavored pipe tobacco burns hotter as well (I assume it's similar on flavored cigars) and gave me tongue bite.

I don't think you taste all the flavors in pipe tobacco like you do in a cigar. I've smoked a corn cob pipe off and on and it's a totally different experience for me. And some of the people I've are more willing to smell pipe tobacco vs cigars.

And for about $6 you can enjoy a pipe and if you don't like it, your not going to break the bank. my .02
