Took a cruise out of Galveston Texas for New Years on the carnival freedom. The last cruise we took in 2011 had a full cigar bar and smoking in many/most areas. This cruise the cigar selection was limited to a couple tubos in a jar on the gift shop counter and the cigar smoking was limited to small areas of 2 outside decks. Even the areas where smoking was allowed (including the casino bar) were off limits to cigars. There was even a bar called “Habana Bar” with no smoking allowed! We also had a balcony deck outside our room that had a zero smoking policy. The last trip we took the same balcony would bring you ashtrays. Just venting and giving a heads up for anyone on the same trip. Be prepared to bring your own smokes and plan your smoking section plans and such.

You're so right I just came back from a carnival cruise out of Miami. And they only allowed cigar smoking on the back of Deck 10 . They only allowed cigarette smoking in the casinos but no cigar smoking at all.Taking several cruises years ago I also remember the cruise ships having full cigar bars. It would be nice if this is something we can come together on collectively and make a difference

I wonder if that's why Rocky Patel's Cigar Cruise no longer includes a cruise??

Some Line I have heard have designated smoking area, if you are caught out of those area, you are fined like $250.00/incident before you leave ship.

Things have definitely changed over the years. Up to about 5/6 years ago you could smoke on your balcony on Royal Caribbean ships. Not now. I know RC and Celebrity have designated cigar areas mostly on the upper decks at the rear of the ship.
Some RC ships have a real nice cigar lounge. I wouldn't let it stop me from cruising, however I do look for the ships with more liberal smoking policies.

When it comes to pipe smoking, do they lump that in with the tighter cigar smoking rules or are they relaxed with it like the cigarette rules? Said differently, could you smoke a pipe in the casino or is it truly only for cigarettes?

I don’t guess I heard mention of pipes. The ciggarette only smoking sections were specific on “no cigars” though.

Cruises are like airplanes and MRI machines. Noisy, crowded and I can't leave when I want to.
You're going on the wrong ships, my friend. Some of these newer/ larger ships are so big there are passengers on there you may never see. The Oasis of the Seas from Royal Caribbean is like a floating city. Probably more places to eat than most cities.

Went on the Norwegian Breakway a few years back and saw they had a “cigar lounge” on board and also 2 areas to smoke near the pool. Figuring the pool deck area the cigarette smokers would all hang out but was I wrong....

Should’ve known that the cigarette smokers invaded the cigar lounge. The vents couldn’t keep up with the smoke. To top it off, being the outside decks were off limits to rough seas so everyone packed into it like a can of sardines.

And since myself and a few other cigar smokers were trying to enjoy ourselves in that tiny ass lounge, we kept getting in trouble for opening and closing the door to the deck since that was the only way to rid of the cigarette smoke. We finally complained but by then it wasn’t even worth it.

And like a few of you also mentioned, can’t even smoke on the outside deck of your staterooms. If you get caught then you get hit with fees.

We have a room set for 2019 on the new Royal Caribbean ship that’s about to hit the fleet. Looks so nice and tons of stuff to do

I'm taking a cruise in May on the Carnival Freedom as well. I know the cigar policy (applies to pipes, too) sucks but I don't mind, if I smoke one every evening I'll septuple my typical input. Looking forward to meeting Havana Bob in Cozumel and getting some genuine Cuban cigars.
