Hey guys I've noticed since I joined BOTL that many of you enjoy this as much as smoking cigars. I'm interested in trying it and I was wondering what it's like? What's good tobacco? Where do I start? Thanks brothers!

BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE
Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Man that is a seriously complicated question.... Just like cigars everyone is completely different. It is so much different than smoking a cigar though. It takes patience and time along with a love for fiddling around trying to pack and get the perfect draw. The only way to get into it is to dive right in. We do have a pipe noob thread if your interested in trading. It can be found in the link below. My suggestion is to find a local shop that has some history with the pipe and just rack their brains with questions. Being taught how to smoke with a pipe is much easier in person but youtube is great as well.

Well I def have the patience haha.. I think it would be something I'd like but you're right I should ask at the shop I go to. I was looking at pipes the other day there and I didn't see a name on them only that they were made in Italy. $40 I'll have to look better next time I go. Thanks for replying and the help bro
I thought I had the patience too until it felt (and tasted) like a raccoon crawled into my mouth to die. Damn aromatic blends you think would love are the hands down the worst idea known to get as a new pipe smoker. I had to battle my way through it with Biotene, but I finally landed on English and Oriental blends that allow me to taste my breakfast the next morning. I would say persistence is a better descriptor than patience.
Coming from a piping noob, I say sign up on the trade. Or just pick up a cob and some baccy and try it out before buying a $40 pipe. Like Hoshy said, it is way different than smoking a cigar.

for me, the watershed moment was realizing i DO NOT like most aro's. which is where most people start. you're here, you've found us, we've seen your stogie posts, it's a given you like tobacco-flavored tobacco. virginia, burley, perique, latakia, oriental, this should be all the flavor you need. learn on tobacco-forward blends, they are more forgiving, then explore aro's. i recommend english blends, especially balkans; big-ass flavor, cool dry burn. FWIW, dunhill nightcap was my eye-opener.
as for a pipe, there is no shame in rocking a cob. k williams' banfoglio's there, i have had my eye on. i LOVE my zavvos (ebay, alexanderbriar? look up alexander zavvos pipes). or old school Dr. Grabows. start small, learn if it could work for you, and feel free to ask questions at any point. o)

Thanks man, that's why I asked bc guys like you are always willing to help a brother out... I appreciate the info! Now time to see if there's anything around local that I can try which I'm sure there is. I will be asking lots of questions

Nope, not that way. You send cigars, the sponsors send you a starter kit. Just follow Hoshy's link and go back to the OP.
Definitely a nice way to sample small amounts of a bunch of different tobaccos instead of buying full tins. A great way to start out!
